Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: CLS is near $100 today, would this be a good moment to initiate a position? Would you wait further and keep the cash for now? Would you initiate a position at 2%? It is for a TFSA and a long-term hold. Alternatively, should I bolster my position in two other growth names (PRL to 4%) and KSI with a position similar to that in the growth portfolio. All in TFSA. Thanks.

Q: Stocks are being pummelled. But as always, hopefully they will come back but it may take a while longer than normal. Trump is not normal. If one understands the risk, would you suggest buying some names that are being particularly hit today (eg SHOP -15%)? If so, can you suggest a few names?

Q: Hi 5i, I went through their results and they matched or beat their goals, and forward growth looks good. I would appreciate you analysis, especially with respect to forward growth. With their expansion in DollarCity and the new purchase in Australia the runway looks good. Again thx for this recommendation several years ago!

Q: seen in the globe and mail this morning even after bce stocks got hammered in the last year and very good possibility of dividend getting cut ceo mirko bibic still received a bonus of 2.4 million dollars last year on top of his wage. after all the layoffs and stock at some 15 year low. is there no shame anymore with ceos as they are only looking after themselves. They always seem to end up on right side of the company no mattter what and as bce the one time stock called orphan and widow stock shareholders get hurt again. Will this ever stop?

Q: BKNG has consistently found its way into your high conviction “top 10” type lists in response to member questions, including very recently for a 3 to 5 year hold. Just curious about your current thinking of when/how to step in to a new position? I’m puzzling over the shorter term and the latest concerns over travel in and out of the U.S. and the possible effect on Bookings revenue?

Q: I will have about 100k to invest shortly, however requiring this money in 2 years time. How would you invest this money in this market? Is there appeal buying the “dip”, purchasing great businesses at a discount? Or is it too risky with my time frame? Money will be held in a TFSA. Thank you

Cnd or US.. growth/dividend/GIC?

Q: What is happening with Canadian Gold Corp (CGC.VN) lately... up 65% this month? I've held it for years now at a loss and am wondering whether to quit while I'm ahead or hang on to it. (It was a bit of good news amidst this overall mess.)

Q: You recently suggested to Brian that alumine would be a good buy. You have generally been positive on lumine. I have some but have been hesitant to buy more. In contrast, I have a full 5% and even more in CSU. For an older person with a more or less balanced portfolio and with some risk tolerance, what percentage would you suggest?

Thanks as always for your great work

Q: Good Evening
My question is about FC -Firm Capital Mortgage Corporation.
In your universe there are several convertible unsecured FC debentures but not the actual FC.
Can you please provide some information about this company. Their dividend was not cut since 2004. Is it suitable for an investor who is interested in relatively less risky investments with predictable income streams.
Thank you.

Q: I just read that you are saying there is a 10% tax on the sale of limited partnership shares. Is that only for US LPs? Or are you saying that when I sell my bip.un shares, that i will have to pay a 10% tax on the proceeds, independent of whether there is a gain or loss from the sale?
