Q: Hi
Is it safe and worth holding Rifco? I have it in rrsp account.

Q: Generally one can find a yield of between 4% and 6% for preferred shares and junk bonds. I am leaning towards pref shares for the higher yielding portion of my portfolio. I realize bonds are higher in the order of liquidation but there seem to be a number of higher quality pref shares that yield close to junk bond yields.
1) Do you agree with my thesis?
2) What is the lowest credit rating would you would accept for bonds and pref shares?

Q: Dear 5i;
I believe that voice recognition for many PDA devices is going to be a big thing in the future . To that end microphone arrays will be an integral component (hardware ) to accomplish this . Can you provide me one or two names of manufacturers of said arrays ?

Q: I am considering the purchase of some Transalta preferred shares. Before making a move, I would first like to know whether Transalta has made any progress reducing the debt on their balance sheet in the past year. Your comments are appreciated!

Q: I already have a 3.9% position in KWH.UN and would like to add another 3% position in a utility. I am leaning toward AQN but worry that I am putting too much into the renewable sector. Should I be concerned and buy FTS instead for diversification purposes ? And is a 7% utility portfolio weighing appropriate ?

Q: I want to invest in either MG or CCL.B & am leaning towards MG. Which would you suggest considering that I won't have too much in the sector[s] regardless of which stock I choose?Which is cheaper& has the most potential for growth & dividend increases?

Q: I have held PKI for some time now and it has not moved. It pays a dividend but can you suggest something that has more immediate growth plus pays an okay dividend? I already have Atlasgas, Enbridge and High Arctic in my portfolio.

Q: Any ideas on the pop yesterday ?

Q: Currently we have 2 TFSA's which I am trying to design for maximum growth. The holdings are as follows:
1-ZLB,HXS,GUD,OTEX,PTG,SIS
2-ZLB,HXS,ITC,KXS,SHOP,TOY.

Please suggest on both of the portfolios (treating them as one) which stocks should be sold, and what should be purchased to replace them. I want the TFSA to act as the supercharger to my overall holdings.

Q: There have been a number of comments recently on your site concerning Warren Buffet's advice to put 90 per cent in an etf which follows the broad U. S. market and 10 percent in an bond etf. There has also been a considerable amount of concern on the site that the American market may be over valued at the current time and something like emerging markets might be a better bet currently. If that this worry has substance, is there some portion of the US market which might be a good bet at the mement--for instance a small cap etf? What would a US small cap etf be a good one? Also what bond etf might be appropriate. There are probably a lot of questions in here. But, I have just shown my confidencein5i by renewing for a couple of more years. So I have lots of ammunition in my questions bag.\t

Q: I own the following stocks and ETFs in a non-registered account:
ATD.B, AIF, AVO, BCE, BNS, BYD-UN, CCL.B, CNR, CSU, GC, KXS, MG, MX, NFI, PPL, PBH, TD, TOY, SJ, WSP, VFV, VUS, VEF, ZQQ
Apart from the ETFS, this mirrors fairly closely your balanced portfolio...

I also have SIS and PHO in my TFSA. I want to add another stock to my TFSA and saw that you had chosen SHOP as a to pick a while back on BNN. Ryan chose DOL just today. Between the two and considering what I already own which one do you think would be best for me? or maybe there's something else? I am looking at 10+ years before I would need the money. cheers

Q: Gordon Pape wrote an article on Fixed income vehicles that was published in the December 28 edition of the Globe and Mail. My question is on the Pimco Monthly Income Fund ETF. Apparently the fund has gained 6% in the last 5 years. can you comment on the fund and the ETF. Would you recommend either for the fixed income portion of a portfolio? Thank You.

What is a good ETF that tracks the tsx broad market that pays a decent dividend. Is CDZ a good choice or do you have another suggestion that would be a counterpart to VFV.
