Q: Hi all,
I was happy to see the deal announcement regarding AAR.UN this morning. I will likely look to sell now rather than wait. I am considering replacing with another REIT or in preferred shares. Considering a balanced portfolio and everything else being equal, looking for both a +4% yearly distribution return and should be a long-term hold, any suggestions? (This is held within an RRSP.) Thanks.

Q: Hello Peter and team,
I was thinking about buying the following 5 REITS. Collectively they would make up 5% of my portfolio (1% each) and the focus would be on income. I chose them to be a mix of Can, US and Intl exposure, and to have higher yields, and less exposure to commercial.

Please note I have a 2% position in NWH.UN but count that as part of my healthcare portion of my portfolio.

AAR.UN
WIR.UN
RUF.UN
NVU.UN
DRG.UN
Thank you for your excellent service!

Q: I had felt very comfortable owning shares of Car.un - then, I read an article in the Globe written by David Milstead The gist of his article was that some REIT payouts are deliberately not accurate, they are manipulated to look healthier than they really are. He elaborates on I'll use the term "Doctoring" maintenance capex and growth capex and ultimately suggests that investors are being misled with what the company reports and what it does not report. His article concerned me. Car.un seems like a very good investment to me, but after reading his article, I ask myself, IS IT?" Please advise/comment. Thank you.

Q: In updating my investment spreadsheets I was surprised to see that I had somehow missed a decrease in D.UN's yearly dividend from $1.50 to $1.00. It appears to have happened in the second half of the year but the company's website is no help - the last post on the front page is from 2016. I find this very strange. I have searched high and low and can't find a press release. Can you shed any light?

Thank you.

Q: Good day!
I have enough money to initiate a new position in a senior's income portfolio. So I am looking at these tempting higher dividend paying companies. Of the 3 which would you recommend? Or another recommendation?

Also, I would like to thank you for your invaluable assistance in managing our portfolios and wish all the team members a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year

Q: I took a recent position in my RSP account on HLP-U which is now WHIVF in my portfolio. I went to buy more today and received a warning message from RBC "That I am attempting to buy a security that may be non-qualified in a registered account, CRA penalties may apply" and saying to contact my broker so I am contacting 5i instead as you'll likely know more than the guy answering the phone at RBC. Is this holding a concern in a Registered Account and if so why?

Thanks,

Craig

Q: Re. Craig's question about HLP.U. I think it contained a typo: when he said he got WHIVF he probably meant MHIVF. I also bought HLP but my account showed that I purchased MHIVF. Its the same company but instead of receiving the TSX-listed shares as requested, we received US OT-traded shares. (mine not in registered account and I didn't receive the warning that he mentioned).
RBC's explanation was: "Please know that this is only a system limitation and does not impact your actual trade."
Does that make sense to you? I'm guessing that when I place a sell order they will try to transact on the lower volume OTC which may not be the best option for me.
