Q: I own 245 shares of REF.UN that I have held in a brokerage account for some time. They recommend that I sell for $50.00 now, and they would only charge 1/2 the commission. I understand that if the deal goes through I can take the option to sell at $53.75 with no charges. In your expert opinion, what are the chances of the deal falling through? If this happens the shares would likely fall back to the $42.00 range.
I do not want the CHP.UN shares, but I would like to sell all of the REF.UN shares.
I am wondering if the broker just wants her commission. PLease give me your expert opinion. Sell now or wait?

Q: I presently own REF in my RRSP (4%) - with the aquisition by CHP would it be advisable to keep the merged position or sell and replace. If I replace - what REIT looks good at the moment? I also have a position in AX (2.5%). Should I sell before the close or wait for another competing offer? If I don't by a replacement REIT what looks good in it's place?

Q: I have investments in the listed Investment Trusts for income.
With the problems in the Retail Sector (Sears, The Bay, etc), and the growth of on-line shopping, are the values and incomes of any these Trusts exposed?
REI.un and CUF.un have been on a steady decline.

Q: I am very impressed with your ability to limit your balanced portfolio to 25 stocks. Currently I hold the above six stocks in the financial sector whereas you hold three. The only one with large imbedded gains is REF.UN which I have held for over twenty years. one third of our total portfolio follows your balanced portfolio. The other 2/3s is managed for us and includes a large allocation to canadian banks. I am willing to sacrifice some stability for more growth. Would you consolidate any of the above stocks to simplify the portfolio? Below is my current allocations. My bias is to keeping REF, GSY and ECN.

Q: i asked 5i a few days ago about preferred shares vs reits. 5i response was that reits are favoured due to the fact they can grow their business/distributions over time but both sectors will be impacted by interest rate hikes. i know in the past you have recommended etf for diversification but i've looked at the reit etf's XRE, ZRE, VRE and I have concerns, rightly or wrongly, with either the weightings (Riocan, HR as % of holdings) or certain reits (DREAM) in each etf. what do you think of just holding REF and CAR as my reit holdings instead of an elf, especially given the pullback in those names over the last month or so? would these 2 provide enough diversification in the reit space? these would part of a portfolio with a fair bit of exposure to utilities, pipelines, banks. thank you

Q: Hi. I believe that CREIT is one of the more venerable and respected Canadian REITs. It has a beta of less than 0.3 which should useful in these volatile markets. It yields a respectable 4%. It is off approximately 20% from its high. It was upgraded this am. Can you comment on NAV, AFFO, and balance sheet/debt risk. It looks like a good buy here with a 10 to 20% total return over a year.
