Q: Hi 5i research team - Can I have your opinion on the ZCM, ZCS, HFR ETFs?
I am looking for ETFs in the bonds category that do not fall much if the market tumbles (relatively safe) and at the same time pays a good interest compared to money market funds. I dont have any in the US market.
Any other ETFs you can think of in the CAD and US markets?

Q: There were a couple of questions today on BMO's ZCS. Both your replies suggested not too much concern holding the short term corporates over a longer period of time. Do you have differing thoughts on ZCM and ZLC? BBB rated bonds in ZCS, ZCM, ZLC are 36%, 58%, and 39% respectively.

Also of note all three seem to have a large discount to NAV. Yesterday between 4.3 to 5.5% (ZLC being the highest). Not sure that is normal, or not, as I don't look that closely and BMO doesn't appear to post the info.

Q: Interest rates are dropping but bond funds are getting clobbered - they normally would go up - is there fear that huge numbers of companies are going bankrupt such that bonds will not be repaid? It doesn't seem to matter whether short term or long term bonds - they are going down. XBB down 3%, ZAG down 3%, ZCS down 4% today so far. This seems crazy. Is this a buy opportunity for corporate bond funds or is the great depression about to happen and everything should be sold into cash?

Q: I have noted that XSH and ZCS have outperformed VSB every year since their respective inception years. Do you expect this outperformance to continue? In what scenario would VSB outperform XSH or ZCS? Even during recent market downturns (2015, 2018), VSB has underperformed. Thank you.

Q: Hello 5i team, I am slowly reducing my exposure to equities for two reasons: position my portfolios ( US + CDN) for a possible recession or slowdown and also, I am 66 year old and my portfolios are 80% equities.
I have taken small positions to above bonds ETFs.. May I have your comments and also, would you recommend short/long or medium bonds and treasuries? As well, do you have other recommendations for someone my age? Thanks CR

Q: Hello,
The return of these etfs has been lower than usual in 2017, I suppose mainly because of the increase in interest rate ? What annual return should we expect over the next few years for these 2 ? Which one is your favorite and/or would you have an alternative (risk adjusted return). Thank you !

Q: I'm switching from mutual funds to ETF's and making a portfolio makeover. I have 3 years to retire and wanted to make sure I chose the correct Canadian Fixed Income ETF (at 40% bonds and 60% equities). I'm looking at HAB, ZCS, VSB, ZAG and ZEF. Of these 5 ETF's which one should I go with?

Q: I am looking for an ETF to replace my maturing corporate bonds as part of my fixed income portfolio. I am thinking of buying HAB. I also currently own HFR which I bought last year. Any thoughts on HAB or do you you suggest something else to provide reasonably stable returns.

Q: Peter; I read a Globe article by the Avenue Group regarding the massive amounts of money flow into bond ETF's. Their main point was, if the bond market goes to a " no bid" situation, then the resulting problems with accurately pricing the Etf's could cause havoc if investors tried to exit. Today Larry Berman suggested buying his ZCS short term corp.bond
as a place to sit and wait for a pullback he thinks is coming. I realize that trying to time the market is pointless but first could you comment on the " no bid" scenario and second do you think buying some ZCS would be like a hedge if anything did develop?
