Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Monitoring Dividend Stocks: I would appreciate your advice as to how investors can monitor and stay on top of bad news, particularly for smaller, riskier dividend stocks.

Example: I have a small position in GRC/Genville Strategic Royalty Corp. I missed the news of the poor results in May. The stock price dived down, and has stayed down. (As of today, the capital loss 49%.) The dividend was cut 27%. How can one avoid or limit losses in similar situations. Also, do you advocate selling a stock as soon as a dividend cut is announced, or anticipated?

Q: I've read and heard a lot of pundits caution about the stretched valuations of Utilities, Consumer Staples and dividend payers as the market looks for yield. What I'm having a hard time understanding is that if that were true, then I would expect yields on those assets to be pushed down as price increases, but these assets still seem to be yielding higher than historical averages. Am I missing something?

Q: A fact that should help strengthen your confidence in HomeCapital management. Look at the LinkedIn profile of a new board member: Brenda Eprile. She has 12 years at the Ontario Securities Commission as Executive Director. Then, 11 years at PriceWaterHouse (partner). Certainly, she is a top choice for the board of a company involved in non-prime lending. I would also add that someone with a profile like this is careful with career moves, wouldn't want to end her career being associated with a fraudulent financial. She must have done some homework before joining.

Q: Hi Peter and Associates!

I hold some shares in Roca Mines and it looks like the shares have lost all value? Do the shares hold any sort of residual value or should I erase them from my statement?

Q: I was allocated some subscription receipts with IPL's recent deal. I am looking to add another pipeline company with a strong and growing dividend that is fairly value or under valued if you can find one. What would you suggest? Also, do you believe that energy infrastructure should be included in our energy sector exposure or utility exposure or other?

Thanks,
Jason
