Q: Canadian Telecoms:

What am I missing here. Three main players in the Canadian market with a government enforced moat. Highest prices in the world.

Services provided: Phone, Cell, Internet - fundamental requirements to participating in today’s society.

Common costs to providers as in the rest of the world, ie towers, cable, switching systems, processing centres.

Why are these Canadian Telecoms not shovelling money? Are they incompetent? Have they become largely bureaucratic and inefficient?

I cannot understand how this business is not thriving. What say you?

Q: Hi team,
Once again my portflio is tanking while the index just cruises along . I have names such as shop, Csu, Lmn, Toi , gsy, Rddt , png and other growth names all down between 4-10%. Canadian names as a group especially weak today . What’s your take on today’s market action? As of today are there any screaming buys out there ? I was thinking of adding on Shops earning drop or Csu .

Thanks ,
Shane

Q: Hi 5i. My question is prompted by Thomson Reuters' long, seemingly inexorable, decline, but it is more of a general question. I have a sense that companies that have either a controlling or at least a major interest held by a family tend to be less likely to pull out of a dive than do companies that are broadly held. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Q: Any thoughts or concerns on these two "very different" companies, Alamos Gold is working its way higher to its 52 week high but Owl has been taken out to the wood shed (private credit market) but it does pay a very attractive dividend as a US investment held in a US RRSP.

Q: would it be duplication to own both ZDV and CDZ in the same unregistered account? should I go with the highest yielding one? I note that CDZ holds more financial, could that be a drawback going down the road?

Q: I was reading the book "1929", I would like to know what you think was the one biggest main reason for the crash?

Do you think it could happen again?

If you're an optimist you'll say no & if you're a pessimist you'll say yes or maybe.

Thank you.

Q: I believe and you can correct me if I'm wrong but many software names in both the US and CAD e.g. TRI, SHOP, NOW have reported fairly good results yet nobody wants to own them at least for the moment. So, if good results do not change the narrative what do you think changes this negative perception? And what in general would be a floor for multiples on some these names?

Q: I am considering an investment in private investment company OWL which has been hit hard by recent sentiment. It pays a dividend of over 7%. I would sell a current holding of BINC which pays a dividend of around 5.7%. I understand OWL has much greater risk and appreciate BINC being managed by Rick Reider. Would you endorse this change not to squeeze an extra 1% of dividend but rather because you agree that over a period of 3 to 5 years sentiment is likely to change regarding private investment firms such that a substantial capital upside is achievable along with the generous dividend. What opinion do you have specifically regarding OWL. At current price levels do you see substantial risk. Thank you.

Q: These ETFs advertise on their website annualized yields of between 10.5% and 11.7% which seems very attractive using covered calls and leverage at a management fee of .65%. Do the covered calls generate that much income to increase the yield as well as the leverage? Also does the yield include a significant return of capital?

Thanks for your great service!!
