Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Can you provide some data points around dividend "growers" companies and if not available dividend companies in general. Current P/E forward looking vs. historic average and ranges. Just wanting to get an idea on how much higher than the average these stocks are currently compared to historic levels, how overvalued they "may" be to help assess downside risk. Thanks!

Q: Premier Wynn announced today minimum wage goes to $ 14.00 an hour Jan. 1st 2018 and then to & 15.00 Jan 1st 2019. Alberta is similar $ 15.00 in 2019. B C will have a NDP government soon and they may follow. Not good for Service Industry like A & W, Tim's, Cara etc. What other Industries will be effected ? Part Time workers to get same benefits. Corporate Leaders are concerned. Good for Workers.

Your comments please.

Q: Hi Peter, Ryan, and Team,

Sorry for another A&W question, but do you think the Ontario government's plan to raise the minimum wage to $15.00 will hurt this stock (as well as others in this space)? I suppose that A&W could raise their prices, but they already seem to be at the high end pricing of the quick-service-restaurant space.

Thanks as always for the pertinent advice.

Q: (1) I own Eclipse (ERM) for yield, what are your thoughts on holding this stock? (2) Is it in the exact same area as Atrium Mortgage and MCAN Mortgage Corp which I also own?
(3) These stocks in the Mortgage area represent ~ 6% of my portfolio, for diversification and safety, what % allocation of these stocks would you recommend I hold or sell or are there better choices? Thanks!

Q: I assume that the price of AW is declining in response to the perceived slower growth of the company. If this is the case, would it then be viewed as similar to that of Boston Pizza? If that is the case, what might we expect the share price to be when a multiple similar to that of Boston Pizza is applied?

Appreciate the insight.

Q: BROOKFIELD RENEWABLE PARTNERS L.P. is, I believe, the legal name for the Brookfield business with TSX symbol BEP.UN. Is BEP.UN a U.S. Master Limited Partnership (MLP)? An article in the May 27 Globe Report on Business discusses the risks to a Canadian investor holding U.S. MLPs, including a 39.6% withholding tax on payments to non-residents (according to the article, the tax applies to both registered & non-registered accounts). Is this applicable to BEP.UN.? Thanks for your reply. Edward.

Q: Unfortunately I hold a small position of Aimia shares (AIM) in a registered account. I have been unable to find a specific reason why A.C. made this announcement now, since the contract only expires in several years. Any ideas as to why? Unless a contractual requirement, might it be a hardball negotiation tactic on their part to renew earlier, if the deal is too one sided?

Assuming A.C. is gone, would not all depend on the quality of management and how might an investor determine their acumen to respond successfully? What I have seen so far is not necessarily reassuring. First, they seem rather silent given the extent to which the stock has fallen. Second, would it not make more sense to cut the dividend and peg the payout to a percentage of the stock price which is more in line with market norms? Would not using the extra cash to build up reserves and/or buy back shares be a better use of capital and a sign of confidence for the market? The situation reminds me somewhat o Noranda Income Fund and the deal they had with Glencore?

I think the reaction is overblown but that is an opinion the market clearly does share given the stock price. Would very much appreciate your insight.
Thank you

Mike
