Q: Hi Peter
Why when running stock screens under criteria in which you know certain stocks should pass,they don't come up,I notice this happens quite often.
The free screen I have been using is at Zacks, I find the large selection of criteria to be better than most.
I subscribe to both Morningstar & The Globe & Mail and find their stock screens lousy.The Globe Investor Gold advanced filter screen was the best, but they closed it down because it was to costly to Maintain.

Q: Hi Guys, I'm a little nervous to start the New Year. What are your favorite defensive stocks right now in the healthcare, staples, utilities, telecom space etc..maybe get cautious and collect some dividends for a period of time until the global economy markets settle in a bit.

In my previous question, I was enquiring about exposure to the US Housing sector to add to a position I already hold with TCN; in your response you mentioned a few REITs but I was surprised that you did not mention any of the Canadian lumber companies such as Interfor or Western Forest.

Q: I see the Globe and Mail has an article about CAE. They say that CAE will benefit from increased defence spending . Would this be a good time to invest with CAE. looking at putting it in my TFSA.

Q: Happy New Year! Thank You for the great service. I hold HCG, BAD and ACQ in my TFSA. All 3 have losses ranging 40% to 47%. I'm a buy and hold type of investor and not looking at selling my positions. What is your long term outlook for these stocks (greater than 5 years).

I am wondering about HLF as a good value pick at the moment. But I notice that the low canadian currency seems to effect them negatively, since I believe that the canadian currency will continue to be weak should I stay away from this stock? What is your general feel for this stock ? Is the div safe? Another stock I am considering is AD. Is the div safe with this stock? I realize that these 2 stocks are very different but if you had to pick one which would you pick and why.

I've been sifting through some beaten up stocks and was wondering which of these two you would prefer. The valuation metrics on both are pretty compelling, so I'm having a hard time deciding. I know EMP is having some integration issues, but so did Loblaws and look where they are now. HCG seems to be suffering from "fear" about the housing market. Would you start a half-position in each, or is there one you would prefer over the other?

Q: I own CSU, KXS, TNC (small weighting) and SYZ. If any, which of the above tech companies would be best to add or replace at this time?

Q: Your opinion on whether Metro or Loblaw would be a better investment?

I have a bunch of losers in my well diversified portfolio, specifically BDI, FRC, FM, SGY, WCP and YRI. My question is which stock(s) would you keep (and why) and of the stocks that you would you would sell (if any), what stock would you replace it with? I am thinking a 2-3yr timeframe, am ok with risk, dividend would be a bonus but not necessary and any industry is fine. Thanks and dock as may credits from my account as you deem necessary.

Q: Peter, on a pure risk vs reward basis, and given today's market activity, which of the above would you suggest for an acquisition in a TFSA for a long-term (5+ years) period?

Q: Happy New Year Peter and the 5i Team,

Last year,I transferred (in-kind) some 'poorly' performing stocks from my RRIF to my non-registered account. The reason for doing this is three-fold: (1) I am in the fortunate position of not needing the RRIF income for living expenses, so am gradually reducing my RRIF portfolio even though I realize that these withdrawals are taxable.
(2) If the stocks continue to under perform, they can be used as tax-loss selling inside the non-registered account. (3) If the stocks turn around, then the non-registered portfolio will grow, and the dividend tax credit will help to reduce the overall tax burden, when applicable.

Given that my 'thesis' is valid, and if what I've outlined is a good idea, which of these "under performers" in my RRIF would you suggest be transferred to my non-registered account? ABT, G, HLF, PEY, and SPB.

Thanks to 5i's timely advice,the "outperformers" in my RRIF have done very well so that even in this difficult market, the portfolio is still up and handily beating the TSX.

Since this is a rather convoluted question, please dock my question credits accordingly!

Q: Hi Peter and team, Happy New Year! I am considering two of the above for my daughters TFSA where we are looking for a mix of growth and income. I believe you like all 3 stocks but they have all had a tough 2015. What is the "bear case" for each? I see a lot of positives but why are these socks moving in the wrong direction. Please rank the three in order of preference for a 2016 price recovery. Thanks
