Q: I’m looking for safer areas to park money in each of our tsfa’s ,rrsp’s and non registered accounts. Can you suggest a few of your favourites for each. We are semi retired and won’t need the funds for at least 10-20 yrs but would like a little more protection in a downturn.Currently 80 equities ,20% cash (CBIL and BIL )and no bonds. If there are safe bond ETFs that you prefer in certain accounts please recommend them as well. Take as many credits as needed. Thanks!

I remember both names as being stable and having a decent dividend. Can you suggest the forgotten name or other names that are similiar and offer similiar features?

Q: Hi,

I was surprised to learn yesterday that a T3 form was provided to me from by bank for holding Purpose High Interest Savings Fund (PSA). It says there is a minuscule return of capital. I thought PSA would only provide interest as reported on a T5.

I went to the PSA website and sure enough, there is a ROC and has been since 2013. Do you know if this is typical of these high interest savings account ETFs and if there is another fund that is similar to PSA without the ROC component?

Q: I right now have 100,000 in cash (Canadian Dollars) that I want to keep in Money Market ETFs for the Short Term.

I have been trying to find the yield for all of the above and it is not easy because most of them show me the annualized yield. Interest rates have come down several times in the last year so the annual yield is not the best way to compare the above funds.

Which of the two funds above do you recommend, the reasons why and what is the current yield on it.

My brokerage account is with Questrade and they do not offer any of their own High Interest Savings Accounts like TD Direct Investing.

If it's not too much to ask could you give me the most accurate yield that you possibly can on the above stated ETF's . It's very frustrating obtaining this information acurrately as different web sites give different numbers . If you were to rely on just one non prescription website what would that website be to obtain reasonably accurate yield information ? I'm sure you get tired of being asked this question on a fairly regular basis .
If you have other suggestion on similar like ETF's i would be all ears .
I also assume that all these ETF's are quite safe and that no more than 100K should be put into any one of them .

Q: I wish to build a 3 year cash reserve to cover market fluctuations in retirement. Looking for liquidity and safety, and ease of use. I am considering HISA, money market funds, GIC's or Bonds ?
My account is at Investorline so would have to be available through them. Are any of these preferable or do you have other suggestions?

Q: Hello 5i,

I have been retired for 4 years and i am now am about to turn 65. i have a DB pension from my previous employer with a bridge benefit that carries until my 65th birthday in a few months.

I have done some projections on maximizing both income over the course of my retirement. I have determined that in my case it appears that these results are optimized if i defer OAS and CPP until age 70...and i am fortunate that i can afford to do this.

At this point i am in the process of converting a enough of my investments to fixed income products to cover income requirements until age 70 (to avoid short term market volatility and help me sleep better at night). One of the products i am looking at is using laddered USD GICs as they have better returns than CAD GICs at this point. I understand you don't give personal advice but i am wondering if there are other options i should consider? Bonds for example? Other?

Q: Is there a cash holding to invest in that is not locked into a term (like a GIC but with no term), so, with full liquidity? I'm thinking of a high-interest type account within an RRSP so I can go to cash a few months in advance of need for the cash, but still incur interest on the cash as I wait to make a monthly withdrawal. I invest with RBC Direct Investing in case that's helpful - perhaps there is an RBC product that suits my needs.

Q: Hi,

If I invest in a high interest savings ETF like CASH, am I taking risk on my principal? Or am I just taking risk on what interest rate I'm earning?

It seems like there is a bit of a principal risk. Would the price go down if the rates go down?
