Q: If one was to invest 100,000 into the balanced equity portfolio on day 1 and keep those same stocks never selling or trading or following any rebalancing or 5i recommendations (assume dividends are just held in cash), what would the balance be? The purpose of my question is to compare the performance of buy and hold as opposed to an active fund. Is there a link to an excel spreadsheet that one could access to do their own evaluation if this is too onerous?

Q: Hi 5i, Alaris announced bad news a while back when one of the companies it was financing ran into trouble and suspended payments to Alaris. At that time the AD share price was around $22 I think and the bad news drove it back down into the teens. Since then it has had three good news announcements. First, it announced that the trouble situation was not a worst case scenario and there was a reasonable prospect of AD getting a significant recovery from it. The next two good news announcements involved about $130M of new or additional investments on terms acceptable to Alaris. My question is: at this point, does it make sense to view Alaris' business (not the shares) as fully recovered from the effects of the investment that went sour, or do they still have some work to do to get back on track? Since the bad news first hit, the shares have had difficulty getting any traction above $20. Thanks for any comments!

Q: Owner of MX and was going to write a question on it today before reading:
"While we like momentum a lot, we view SPB as more of an income security than growth, and in our view MX is too cheap on valuation to endorse this switch. "

I recall a lot of talk on BNN etc about the oil companies as prices started to come down. Valuations were cheap and nobody thought oil was going as low as it did. Is there not some risk here that methanol prices keep going lower in the way oil did which would throw the valuation argument into question? What would it take for 5i to throw in the towel here?

Q: What will it take to get rid of this Meir guy? I thought the results of last meeting's votes were the end of this nonsense. His childish attacks and lying news releases are an embarrassment. Is he 10 years old or something? Is he mentally challenged or is he just a terrible person? Obviously Jonny G and the Knight team made a big misstep partnering with this clown. Does Medison (ultimately Knight) pay for these spurious news releases? How is this not slander? What is Knight to do?

“Be mindful that the largest beneficiary of the share repurchase program is Jonathan Goodman. Even if he does not participate, the reduction of shares at a substantial discount to last $10 per share capital raise only serves to increase his percentage control of the company. Like his conflicting interests with his family business (Pharmascience), either way he wins and shareholders lose.

“Rather than engage in financial engineering that principally benefits the CEO, why didn’t the Board consider a partial tender offer for shares at $10? Just give shareholders their money back at the price paid? It’s a fair question. But one that we fully expect the company to ignore.
