Q: I hold two major mining companies based on inflation expectations and yield.

With the current conflict in Europe came a surge in commodity prices and the threat of sanctions against the major Russian production of such strategic metals as aluminum.

I looked at the operations of both companies and didn't see anything significant in Russia that might suffer from sanctions or even expropriation. I would have expected both to move sharply higher.

They both dropped with the invasion of Ukraine. I'm missing something. What is it?

Q: With physical battery grade Nickel stockpiles emptying do you have any recommendations for producers or an ETF that would be a good investment on the Canada or the US stock market?

Q: 2021 has been good to me overall but as always I have my regrets. I bought 2% weighting of BHP in Sept around 61 buck, mostly because I had little exposure to the sector. Do you think its gone too far to fast on it attempt to clean up its environmental footprint? Do you think the sell off has to do with tax loss selling or company issues? Finally would your view be favorable for next year or should I cut my losses. I thank you for years of good service and giving me an excellent source for sober second thoughts.

Q: With the recent drop in price, would you consider BHP an ideal opportunity to take advantage of tax loss selling over the next few weeks? Do you still think the dividend payout is reasonably safe? I have not seen the "each representing two" statement before... pls. explain! I am 84 and wanting to add to my income portfolio.

Q: Hi 5i,
I'm trying to put together a materials allocation for my portfolio that pay a dividend. These are the companies I have come up with that pay a stable dividend and appear to not have too much related business. Is more diversification needed and can you make recommendations. Also is there any better replacements for these companies I would like to have at least a two percent dividend. Thanks!

Q: What metal sector(s) would you recommend that will stand to benefit the greatest from the move to renewables. Please provide 3 growth companies to consider.

Would you also please provide 3 value companies that show solid values and good rebound opportunities in the same or similar sector.
Thanks, Peter.

Q: Hello. As a Canadian resident, how are the dividends from these companies handled in respect of any hold back and taxes? They would be held in a non registered account.

Q: Hello. Can I please get your comments on these companies as to commodity exposure mix, valuation, growth and dividend safety/payout details?

How would you rank if one was looking to buy all or some?

Deduct points as appropriate. Look forward to your comments. Thank you.

Q: Been trying to find out if either of these holdings in BHP will be entitled to receive the new Woodside shares that only trade on the Australian exchange.
Stock took quite a drop when management decided to hive off its petroleum business but receiving these shares would help balance the loss in valuation.
Any idea how one would sell the Woodside shares if they are distributed to the ADR holders?

Q: I have a two energy stocks (SU & IMO), but I don't have any mining/resource stocks. BNN mentioned both RIO and BHP Group as having good potential and also good inflation picks. I'm thinking about picking up the above two and also LUN and possibly CMMC. Do you see any problems with this combination for a conservative investor?

thanks for the great service!

Q: I'm aware of the decision to dispose of their oil & gas holdings and coupled with the market sentiment, resulting in a substantial price drop. With that drop the dividend yield has increased substantially. My questions are regarding the dividend.

1) Did they also announce anything regarding the dividend (i.e., are they cutting it)?

2) If no announcements, is it sustainable at current levels?

3) If there were no announcements and it's sustainable, does that not signal to the market the high probability of price appreciation back to a more normal dividend yield resulting in an opportune time for a short-term trade or a long-term investment?

Thank you.

Q: BHP recently reported good results but also signalled it is getting out of gas and oil. The share price has dropped substantially and I'm wondering if you can shed some light on this reality. I hold it as an ADR and am wondering if i am entitled to the shares of Woodside that are supposed to be compensation for its exit of oil and gas.
