Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I request your opinion on National Oilwell Varco (NOV.us). I have been holding NOV. Didn’t cut my losses . Just as the behavioral science fellows correctly say, I held on to NOV, BHI, and many other oil-related 'enterprises'. I dreamt of fabulous wealth gushing from this black gold. I have now been rudely awakened from slumber. Oil is not, after all, the black gold one thought. Gold remains yellow and elusive, while oil is apparently plentiful. In your opinion , based on your experience, instinct and the data on your Bloomberg , are oil service companies more likely than not to rise in value by end of year ? Is NOV’s dividend safe... or did the Doha Club just pull the rug under us?

I will nurse my many painful wounds as I await your thoughtful response, O Wise One (I am bowing). and thank you for creating 5i and making it available to us.
Best wishes

Q: Hi Peter and Ryan, what is your take on ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS in the U.S.?
Thomson Reuters has a buy rating.
S&P has a hold rating.
Morning Star has a sell rating. What do you use or what should one use as metrics to determine whether a stock should be bought or not. As usual, your toughts are deeply aprreciated and valued. Thank-you! Sam

Q: What do you think of BHI as a two year investment? It has far more analyst recommendations and strong recommendations than others and yet doesen't seem to have participated in the recent oil rally? It's one year chart is ugly.
Why do analysts like it so much?
Is this a good time to start a position?
Is there a Canadian alternative you like better?

Q: Hi Peter, what is your outlook for the Cdn$ vs the US$ for the next 1-2 years ? If you think the Cdn$ will retreat from where it is today, are there any US equities you would deem excellent purchases today ? Thank you.

Q: STX.us just fell off a cliff. The yield is even higher now (but only because its price was trashed). Is this hard drive maker able to re-position itself or is it now a Dodo? Is dividend safe? Would it be an attractive target (for Western Digital-WD for example ?)

Is a shareholder better to sell STX and switch into WD? I prefer not to give up on companies too easily, but if you feel I should, I’d appreciate your thoughts.

Incidentally the software changes as described sound great. The ability to 'star' (mark) something for personal follow up will save much time. Also welcome is the new ability to search more than one symbol at a time. Best wishes, Adam

Q: Hi 5i team,

I have a 3 month old son and have opened him up an RESP. Can I get your opinion on what 2-3 stocks you would invest in that provide decent income (in the form of a dividend), and are relatively safe knowing that he will need the money in 18 years. I was thinking of playing it more conservative, but I have been contemplating taking a shot at something with a good growth potential.

Thanks so much.

Q: Hello, Many Real estate investment trusts(e.g. IVR)and related ETFs (e.g. REM) distribute ~10 to 12% dividend. This appears very good but may be a high risk investment. What is your opinion about IVR REIT and REM etf?. Which one is better? or may be none?

Thanks

Q: Hi,

On January 19th you suggested the following US stocks(UTX, SBUX, GOOG, ULTI, CALM, DIS, JNJ, LMT, SIMO, EBIX.) to "Stephen" who was looking to deploy some US cash, and looking for "reasonable risk, decent growth and some divided," Do those still look good to you as I'm looking to add some US exposure in the next couple weeks to compliment my Canadian holdings which follow your Balanced Portfolio.

Thanks!
