Q: I was reviewing my portfolio and thinking about 2020. Right now I have a large cash position and will want to invest some of that next year. But in what stocks?

An interview with Sir John Templeton on ROBTV many, many years ago came to mind and it may be a good advice for others.

Sir John was asked when was a good time to buy a stock and he stated "at the point of maximum pessimism".

Then he was asked when was a good time to sell a stock and he replied "you sell a stock when you find a better stock to buy."

I hope I can remember that advice as we move into and through 2020.

Q: Dear 5i,
In the parts of my portfolio that outside of the 5i Balanced Equity Portfolio, I want to add some US market exposure. I hold precious metals and some TLT in this area as well and was looking at an S&P500 ETF. IVV seems to have the best combination of dividend yield and low management fee followed by the O'Leary Quality S&P500 ETF which aims to own the highest quality companies (by balance sheet and earnings, I believe) in each sector of S&P500.

Is there one or the other of these that I should pick for holding in a TFSA or should I look to the CAD-hedged XSP or something else?

Q: Hi, Brookfield Infrastructure announced this $2.4 billion purchase of Bell Cincinnati by offering Bell shareholders Cash, but I am not sure if there was a mention of how company intends to finance the deal. They also indicated Brookfield's intention to invest $ 1 billion for Cicinnati Bell's infrastructure development. Any ideas, if company will use its cash resources or an equity financing may be in the cards and if so the time frame. I was wondering, if recent decline in unit prices from $70 to $63.65 had something to do with this. Thanks

Q: I'm trying to buy some volatility very similar to VIX index...If you look at VXX vs VIX there is no correlational..VXX goes straight down YTD ($40 to$15)while VIX bounces around...I need a direct corelation in terms of percentage moves...is there something out there?

Q: In regard to the question by James regarding a book on financial management in retirement, he might find the book "Retirement Income for Life" by Fred Vettese helpful. Fred Vettese is an actuary and his book is full of useful information about decumulation of RRSP's and other savings accounts to provide retirement income.

Q: CCW just had a silver discovery at their mine. Was it sizable & significant? How is their debt load & prospects for growth? I've inherited a few shares from the dissolution of another company I held. Buy, sell or hold? Thanks ,as always , & happy holidays.

Could I please get your analysis on the above names as part of a diversified small cap portfolio focused on capital gains over 3-5 year hold. I have partial positions at higher prices in both IOM and SIM but they seem undervalued now given their prospects and current price. I generally prefer to diversify over averaging down while still building a portfolio as a strategy, but I am also willing to be flexible if the risk and reward is right. Would you add to existing positions in these stocks? Under what circumstances would you recommend someone consider averaging down?

I also like the prospects of GSI VHI and FLY and would appreciate your comments on them as being added to a aggressive growth portfolio. Any red flags or risks other than size? How would you rank them given their current price?

Q: Hello,
Given the December 20 court ruling against ETFMG in the US (https://www.etf.com/sections/features-and-news/hack-etf-issuer-enters-uncertain-chapter?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=weeklynewsletter) would it be wise to sell an existing position in HACK if held? The article says holders are protected by a custodian but I am unable to assess the risk of this security going forward. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
