Q: Hello 5i
About a month in and wanted to say great service and looking forward to the future. In looking at the companies you cover it seems like your B and higher ratings have been very successful while protecting and growing capital. Curious to know if you have a report on the total returns based on ratings. For example all B rated reports have returned x%, C x% etc.?For me screening by ratings of B and better will be the starting point of my investment selections to be further investigated
Thanks
Sal
5i Research Answer:
We have not done this screening, and historically it may be difficult because of course some ratings will have changed over time, which would mess up the data set.

Very interesting idea! It should not really mater if your rating for a stock changed. 'Just' calculate the return from your rating date to when the rating changed (or to now if the rating has not changed). Monthly.
I believe the dataset could be normalized in some fashion (statistician?) to account for the number and age of ratings in each category, etc.
Q: Hi Peter,
I have some concerns regarding Alaris. How close are they to resolving their issues with their problem companies? How safe is its dividend and can we expect some growth in the next couple of years?
Thank you for your help.

Q: I have done well on EBIX getting in around $20, I know you follow the company and its been having a good day today. Do you think valuations are getting stretched here and its time to sell? Its still less than 5% weighting in my portfolio.
Q: Last year CM agreed to buy Private Bancorp in the US at a price which is now about 20% less than the current market price of the PB. It appears highly unlikely PB's shareholders would vote to approve the deal. Of course CM could raise their offer. Today's GAM article discusses this deal and a confusing ( to me ) comment about CM having an option to buy 2% of its stock should the deal fail and therefore supporting CM's stock price. I would appreciate your thoughts on this deal as I am currently considering selling the stock at today's levels given the uncertainty about where this stock is going.
Q: I'm looking to increase my exposure to the infrastructure sector. Current fundamentals are an important consideration but I'm most interested in the company's future prospects and its ability to take advantage of infrastructure spending that is necessary and promised by many present governments. I would appreciate it if you could suggest 3-4 companies that you feel are the most capable of taking advantage of opportunities as they develop in Canada and globally in the next 1-2 years. A safe and increasing dividend is always a plus. As always, thanks in advance for your advice.
Q: I see chartwell has been a bit weak since the Q4 earnings report. I noticed that AFFO only increased by one cent (5%) in Q4, although 10cents (approx 13%) for the whole year, perhaps suggesting that growth is slowing? In addition, I was disappointed that they only increased the dividend by 2.5%, which is much less than AFFO growth. Does this suggest to you that growth is going to be minimal for 2017? The yield is not high as I think investors (myself included) were buying into the growth story. Do you see meaningful growth going forward?
