Q: i was just reading about Fairfax's new partnering in Africa and am wondering what your thoughts are on both ffh and the African effort. I have always considered Prem to be an astute investor even though ffh has languished of late. Africa does seem to have considerable potential and the two main men FFH is partnering with do seem to have solid credentials. What is your thinking on both companies? many thanks

Q: I have FAH and FIH in a long term RRSP. I believe in the long term growth of these regions and I’m cautiously hopeful Mr Watsa and team are making sound PE investments to try to benefit from regional growth. But I find them tricky to assess because of the fees and the multi-asset PE structure. Can you provide your view on the financial performance of these companies? I would also appreciate your thoughts on whether you’d consider topping up a relatively small position. Please deduct two questions and deal with each separately. Thanks!

Q: I currently hold Fairfax India and Faifax Africa. I consider them long term investments but I’m concerned about recent performance as well as (mainly) the longer term grind of the high management fees. I want direct exposure to growing populations and economies for a multi decade Rrsp.

I have the same questions for both (please deduct accordingly):

1. What would be your preferred investment for a multi decade Rrsp, for exposure to Africa: FAH, or an ETF, or something else? If something else, what would it be? Why?

2. Same questions for India and FIH.

Thanks you for your great service.

Q: Hi Peter/Ryan
I am in the dog house on listed stocks in my registered accounts (RRSP/TFSA/RESP). For TOY and TSGI , I will wait for your review in Q&A section. As part of cleaning up portfolio would you keep these or if not then replace with which stocks? Money requirement and risk is not an issue.

Value your opinion. Thanks

Q: Hello 5i Team,
I was curious on your thoughts about Fairfax India and Africa Holdings and why are both these positions down significantly (below BV). I hold both a 5% position in my account and wondered if I should add a bit on the premise that the USD is near its all-time high as well as benefiting from tax-loss selling.
These appear to be well managed holding companies that are invested in the growth of emerging markets.

I appreciate your response and thank you for the great service you offer.

Q: First off, my apologies to all the members for the recent sell-off in the markets. I should have warned your readers that I decided to put some money to use at the end of last week so there would inevitably be a sell-off not too long afterwards.

But seriously, I was wondering if you could provide any insight/feedback/critique into whether it makes sense to view the projected growth in market development in African nations in the coming years and decades as a viable investment thesis. If so, do you have any suggestions on how to invest in Africa? A cursory exploration led to Fairfax Africa (FAH.U) - does this seem like a worthwhile investment? Are there any other suggestions I could investigate further?

Thanks in advance,
Rory

Q: Hello Peter,
With the increase in interest rates, i was expecting Sunlife and Manulife to go higher but they have dropped. Any comments? I want to increase my weighting to 5 percent for Enbridge and Alimentation Couch Tard but both stocks are not responding well eventhough Alimentation had good results. Would 5 percent be too much? Also, if you had a choice between fairfax africa and india, which one would you prefer and finally, I was thinking of Jean Coutu for a 5 year hold. Can you see it doubling in 5 years? Lastly, all the stocks that the shorts went after have not really recovered (CXR, HCG, CRH, etc). What does this say about the analysis that was done by various managers including ones on BNN? I am not blaming anyone but it is discouraging that the shorts were right. Thank you

Q: Both of these stocks show up as Canadian Currency on my stock screener but when i bought FIH it was purchased in American Dollars. How can FIH trade on the tsx yet be traded in American Dollars (Never had this happen before; is there more us currency tsx stocks like this that i need to be made aware of?).

Does FAH-U trade in American Currency as well? Also do you know the holdings of FAH-U?

thanks

Q: My emerging markets exposure is currently 100% weighted in India via Farifax India HLDGS. I am looking at adding either Russia (RSX) or South Africa (FAH-U) to the mix. Which country do you feel has the better growth potential or is there a third country you prefer at this time? Is this targeted country focus better than an emerging markets ETF like ZEM?
Your thoughts and feedback is greatly appreciated and I understand this is outside of your coverage universe
