Q: Hi, the US portion of my portfolio is composed of about 15 stocks, mostly dividend paying. Because the dollar is fairly high, I am reluctant to buy US stocks at the present time. Therefore, I am looking to add to my US exposure through a dividend paying ETF. I think ZUD (which is hedged to CAN dollar) is a good choice (do you agree?), but I was wondering whether you would have other suggestions for an ETF or even a mutual fund that would pay a dividend. Q: Because the markets seem to be moving in a different direction, I am concerned about sector allocation. Q: Hi Team, In my RRSP, I'm Currently holding 30% weight in U.S.market with 20% in VUN (Vanguard Total U.S. Market ETF.) and 10% ZDY (BMO U.S. Dividend ETF) given the potential of rising rates, would I need to get rid of ZDY which has performed well and replace it with VGG.Is there something else you would recommend. Q: Spartan Energy (spe) increased their production about 50% from 13,000 boe to 20,000. They increased their share count to 500 million after selling 170 million @$3. However, they onlyused $200M of cash and borrowing to pay for the $700M purchase. Does it seem logical that this company has grown from a $3 stock to as $4.50 stock overnight and, if so, how long do you predict it may take to get there?

Q: I know technology and TWLO has a very good tech story. I have noticed although the stock is significantly lower from the highs, institutional ownership went up from 6% to 11%. is there any insights you can provide at this time?

Q: Northwest Healthcare Properties accounted their quarter a couple weeks ago. Can you review and see if anything is out of the ordinary? If I had to look at one metric to make comparisons quarter to quarter or year to year, how do I gauge if this REIT is executing well?

Q: I own both companies, mainly for the dividend; but am down about the same in both (25%).

Question is: do I dump AD and buy more of BDT?

Do I dump both?

If I sell both , what would you suggest as a replacement for a comparable, but more secure dividend? Sector is not a consideration here.

Q: I've recently taken pretty big hits in d box and nyx gaming. It's time for me to get away from the small caps and move on to something with stable growth and actual profits. I don't mind fluctuations in share price or the market in general but I no longer have the stomache for the wild swings. Any suggestions?

Q: Hi,while WIN has not worked out,I still have it and waiting for a rebound because of their cash position and possible sale? I do have a problem selling out of a loosing position.
Here's my problem,I sold Drt at $5.05 the low,but it is now $5.70 bought at $5.40.
So now I still have BOS bought at $17 and think if sold I will be selling at low again?
Would it be best to sell both or hold? If I sell what would be two or three good replacements,sector should be no problem.

Q: There is a saying "the first dividend cut cut is never the last dividend cut". Excluding resource stocks, in your experience, is this true more often then not?

Just as a company paying its first dividend is a very strong buy indicator, is a dividend cut equally as strong a sell indicator?

Q: The U.S small caps index had a 10 day string of gains, which hasn't happened for 5 years. It looks like animal spirits are finally back, and I'd like to buy before the "take-off". It seems it's easy to miss the boat these days, which happened to me with with U.S banks! Do you think this IWM move will carry over to the TSX small caps? I'm considering buying 1/3 positions in BAD, DHX, and ACQ. Thank you.

Q: Hi 5i,

I am retired and have a 5-10 year investment horizon. I love your Q&A database and find it provides almost all the answers I need.

My question is a general one around interest rates, but I have provided A&W as an example.

I have heard for, it seems like more than a decade, that when interest rates rise, then the price of dividend producing equities will suffer as folks move to bonds and other more growth orientated companies or funds. I have always thought that, say A&W with a 4.4% dividend (and a visible healthier food strategy driving higher sales) would retain its value unless interest rates rise "a lot". The dividend is likely very stable and tax beneficial, so very attractive.

Now, with conditions forming out there that may lead to rising interest rates, and maybe "a lot", how concerned should I be with, say, holding my A&W.

General comment. I notice that some of us who ask questions like to define our status (retired) and time horizon (5-10 years) as we pose a question. I would be supportive in providing a general profile that is maintained at your end so you can "look me up" when answering questions. Optional for us, as some might not want to share. Just a thought.

Re: dividend aristocrats vs dividend growth

Q: Purchased several years ago at $25. plus, I am now looking at a pref. that trades around $14.
Current yield is just short of 10%.
In your opinion Is it time to double down and enjoy more of the juicy yield or bow out and lick my wounds?
The position makes up less than 5% of my portfolio and is my only preferred share holding.
Should you think it prudent to sell this security, would you please suggest an alternative.
I am 70 and comfortably retired.
