Q: What makes a stock have value?
I've only been investing for about 4 years.
Is a stock valuable because that's the price we believe someone would buy the entire company for? How does one get value unless they can sell to someone else, or receive a dividend?
If the ability to sell or purchase is blocked, is the company worth anything? (ie Petronas/Progress)
Does the blocking of Petronas/Progress put a positive pressure on dividend paying companies?
The refusal of Petronas/Progress seems huge to me.

Q: Peter,
Do you think we have any hope for RIM? I have been buying RIM share lately in my RRSP/TSA because I think BB10 will get some market attraction and also possible takeover from Facebook or HP or even Dell? Target price $20 - $25 and agree with Ross Healy on his comments on BNN. Your commenets much appreciated.
Regards,
Mohammed.
Q: I'm interested in your opinion of this little company called Symbility Solutions (TSX Venture: SY). They seem to have a steady stream of business (from their recent press releases) and seem to suggest they have a good niche in providing Software-as-a-service (SAAS) solutions to the insurance marketplace. What do you think about it? How much of a moot do they have in warding off competition?
Q: Do you think BOX.UN represents good value? Lot's of analysts like it. Yield is a little low, but the payout seems to be low. Do you see much upside?

Q: Hi Peter
With regard to ATP I own the AZP.PR.A (Atlantic Power Pref) which pays a good dividend. Is this a better choice instead of the Common which is riskier and has little upside dividend growth or is there a catch? Thank-you, JohnS
Q: Hi Peter and 5i: AvenEx (AVF) had a miserable Q2 with AECO gas well under $2. Presumably Q3 will be shown to have been better, with the AECO gas price having averaged at least 10% or so above the $2.00 line. One might expect early Q4 guidance to be more positive, with AECO gas averaging over $3.00 so far in October, WTI hanging in above $90, and the Elbow River facility apparently participating profitably in the rise of train-shipped oil. The stock has had a nice move up from the $3 level within the last week but right in the middle of that they announced they are conducting a strategic review of their oil and gas assets. What would you do at this point if you held the stock? Would you view the asset review as a positive development or might you be concerned that it has been occasioned by negative circumstances that have yet to be announced? Thanks for any thoughts!
