Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I averaged into BGI as I purchased a 2.5% position in a RIF portfolio I'm now down 13% from the average purchase price, the dividend yield is now 9.5% do you think this is sustainable? Also do you have an opinion on why this is not doing so well compared to the other parts of Brookfield which seem to be firing on all cylinders.

Q: I have some cash to deploy in an income account (riff) and would like your opinion on where there maybe value given the recent pullback. I am also mindful of not chasing yield and risking capital unduly. I have a 3 percent position in Bgi that I could increase or start a new position in Dr if you think the dividend is fairly safe and given time the stock will rebound. I am fairly diversified and open to other suggestions of income bargains out there.
Thanks for your insight.

Q: Good morning 5i
Please advise on the above and similar income related funds. I am trying to set up a retirement income. At 76 yrs old and I have about $100,000.00 to invest. Safety is important as well as income. Your previous advice has been taken.
Thank you

Q: Further to your answer to Delores regarding cineplex, do you think you will be publishing the update before or after they report earnings May 5? The reason I ask, is we currently hold cineplex in a riff account where the income is used as a pension replacement. While the stock has been a solid investment, aside from the modest yearly dividend increase there really hasn't been much capital appreciation in the last year. Although I am intrigued with the potential impact of the rec room once opened in Toronto, will have on their bottom line. We are thinking of replacing it with Bgi.un which pays an 8 per cent dividend. Ignoring the fact they are in different sectors can you comment on the following:
1) is this a good switch and will this switch increase risk
2) would you sell cineplex after the ex dividend date or wait for the earnings release?
As always thanks ( especially with my more recent buys of Crius and Shopify)!

Q: Aside from the market cap, which is pretty obvious, could you explain the difference between these two funds. In particular why/how BGI pays almost twice the dividend. I have held BIP for quite a while and done really well with it, but can't help looking at BGI.
Thank-you

Q: Hi Peter,
Enghouse has not been doing well. Do you still like it for long term hold? Any idea why Brookfield Bussiness Partners is going up today? Also, does recent announcement of Brookfield raising $14 B for the Global infrastructure Fund refer to BGI.UN? If so, is it better to invest in BGI.UN or BIP. UN? Lastly, Telecom stocks are stable but the PEs are quite high. Can you shed some light please? Thanks
