Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Hello, I sold Descartes DSG quite a while back when you indicated that it was very expensive (and kept Enghouse ENGH), now that you have added DSG to the portfolio I'm wondering if I should sell ENGH and buy DSG back. Or are they 6 of one and half a dozen of the other going forward. In balancing my portfolio I trimmed some CSU because it was up around 17%, so now I do not want to invest in a much lesser quality technology company with the proceeds. Second somewhat related part to this question: I once owned QST, MCR, and BAD and sold them also quite a while ago. Now that you have renewed interest in them and added them to the portfolios I'm feeling a bit reluctant to add them back, I guess because I once sold them. Obviously you have renewed confidence in them. And I'm trying to keep to my principle of following the portfolios. Can you help me regain confidence in these three names. Thanks for great service, as always.

Q: Hi there,

I currently own PXT and was thinking of switching to QST. What would your thoughts be on this switch. I was thinking QST could be a "better" play on the oil industry and one that is less exposed to the price of the resource and with better upside overall. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Q: What 4 Canadian stocks would you buy that have the potential to appreciate quickly for a short term hold? Risk not an issue. Well balanced portfolio.

Q: Peter:
I read with interest your article in this weekends National Post about "screening for stock winners." At the end of your article you concluded that Questor Technology is one of the few stocks that checks "most of the boxes" on your screen. That said I am curious why 5i did not resume coverage on this Company and/or add Questor Technology to the 5i model growth portfolio given its great performance year-to-date?

Q: Thanks to replying to my question.Would disclosing the information in a presentation on their site be sufficient? I also notice that in their press release of the year end numbers they state:
"The Company secured contracts in North Dakota during 2018 which resulted in moving 23% if it’s fleet from Colorado to North Dakota during the three months ended December 31, 2018. The successful award of North Dakota contracts and reallocation of rental assets to new markets support the Company’s strategy to diversify its markets and customer base. "
It is possible that management concluded that they had made sufficient disclosure with those sentences even though they did not mention that it was all to one customer. What is significant is that the % increased from 23 to 40.

Q: For my small cap portion of my portfolio I was thinking of adding one. Both have run hard and have good growth. For a long term hold what company would you invest in. I consider management and debt management a priority.
Or should I buy a little of both? Would you have a better alternative? Thanks

Q: Questor recently posted on their website a presentation to Altacorp in April. In the presentation they state that in the first quarter (Jan 1, 2019 -March 31. 2019) they shipped 39% of their rental fleet to a new customer in the Bakken. This would seem to be significant news yet no press release was issued. Are companies obliged to disclose material contracts or is that at their discretion?
