Q: Hi Peter and team!! Happy family day weekend! My advisor has suggested investing in Algonquin Power Convertible Bonds. To tell you the truth, I never quite know whether these are a good deal or not. Here's the terms: This is a 10 year 5% convertible bond, where only 1/3 of the bond's face value is due on closing Mar1/16. The instalment receipt priced at 33.30 per 100 will earn 15% until the second instalment is due 15-90 days after approval is granted for their acquisition of the Empire District Electric Company. Interest is paid quarterly and the bonds are convertible at $10.60/ common share of Algonquin Power. This is for my RRSP. What do you think ? Is this a good investment ? Any caveats? Do you think the management team at PHM is competent enough to run a public company?

After listening to the latest earnings call, they can’t forecast the simplest of financial metrics namely revenue growth or gross margins. How can they run a company without this basic awareness of what is going on?

I realize that in order to claim a capital loss you have to wait for 30 days before repurchasing the security.Can you still claim a capital loss if you purchase a call option of the said security after you sold it ?

Should the news below be of concern, or does it represent a good entry point for AQN, since it's down today? I was considering AQN for my TFSA, since I have some new cash to deploy since the 'merger' of CDV. Or would you say that AQN isn't enough of a "grower" for a TFSA?

Q: Hi Team, I noticed that there has been an offer to take Sirus XM Canada private. The offer is in the vicinity of $4.25. Yesterday's price was $3.68. I paid $5.00 for the stock. Would you suggest waiting to see if the offer increases or sell now as an opportunity to get out with a limited loss.

TransCanada has a bond with a maturity in July 17, 2025. The bond has a yield to current ask of 3.48% (coupon is 3.30%). Any thoughts or concerns about purchasing this bond with the intent to hold to maturity?

For information, my current portfolios are 85% equity and 15% debt.

Q: KXS is down 30% in less than 2 weeks (Feb 1). The reason it is down so dramatically is well beyond market performance or the 'tech' sector. Even on a very up day like today at best it's flat.

What is happening with this company?

Q: I own a bond issued by Aimia, (Corp. AIMC 6.95 01/26//17). The company seems to be having its troubles lately. Is the company secure and do you think the bond is safe and will mature at par on its maturity date? If you can help I would greatly appreciate the support.

Q: My energy weight is very small overall. Currently holding CPG, VET, CNQ, SU, ENB and TOU. The only energy position not paying me a dividend to wait for a recovery is TOU. Would a switch to PEY be prudent to collect a dividend? Would PEY carry more risk than TOU. Do have have concerns with any of my other energy holding? Best, Don

Q: Just a comment to add about Rogers Sugar, in the short term they may see a benefit in volumes as a dead bird was recently found in the silos at their competitor's Redpath Sugar Facility in Toronto. From what I hear a lot of sugar had to be disposed of with downstream users scrambling to find alternative sources. The facility is still shut down until the source of the bird is found. Q: You last commented on BIR on Dec 17th. Year-end results were recently released which appeared reasonably positive given the difficult environment. I would appreciate if you could update your comments/opinion.
