Q: Hello
I recently read the following,
Warren Buffet flatly endorsed a simple portfolio of inexpensive index funds for his own survivors. My advice to the trustee couldn't be more simple: Put 10% of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90% in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund. (I suggest Vanguard's.) I believe the trust's long-term results from this policy will be superior to those attained by most investors — whether pension funds, institutions or individuals — who employ high-fee managers.

If a Canadian was to follow this advice, and allocate some to a Canadian index fund, a U.S index fund and short term government bonds. What would your allocations be and what Canadian Index fund would you recommend? If you where to periodically rebalance the portfolio how often would you do that. Would you use this strategy in RRSPs, TFSAs and RESPs?
Also should the investor protect him/herself from U.S dollar currency risk?
Use the assumption that this is for long term investing.

thanks, looking forward to your comments.

Q: Since you have downgraded this stock by 2 notches would you now say that it is a sell rating? I currently owned this stock in my RRSP and wonder if I should sell and replace with another stock?
Thanks

i am looking for your views on unilever versus Bristol-meyers. both of these have corrected significantly and am looking to add to my US holdings. I need a steady stream of US income in the future so trying to build a nice, steady group of dividend payers that i can hold for a long period of time.

Cheers and thanks for all your great advice.

Q: Everything is getting hammered this week, but i do not understand the complete devastation in surge, if as you say the payout ratio is 65 per cent with oil at 90. Dollars, then at what point will surge have to cut there payout, now yielding over 9 per cent at a price of 6.60. It seems to me like this selling in surge is way over done, it is down at least 25 percent in less than a month. And why are insiders buying, they are getting killed. Dave

Q: Hi: Thank you for your Sept.28th. article "Signs to Watch for When the Market Declines." Perhaps you could follow up by suggesting where I can find the data to implement the criteria in that article, data I find hard to find. Thank you for your excellent service.

Q: a bit more about WEQ please.
The bought deal at $8 by brokers means that the brokers got a discount on this.Is there a way to know what the discount was?
Does this also means that WEQ got this discounted price in extra capital per share,so the $8 means nothing?
Also how long will this share dumping last by the brokers in this deal?it might take a long time for this huge amount.
All sounds the small investor is getting stung again.

Q: Hi Peter and team,

Any comments on the performance of NSTG (Nanostring). Smallish biotech company. Downturn in the sector has hurt the stock. I see you are recommending ISIS, is it reasonable to expect an increase in NSTG's stock price this year or would you expect the biotech sector (and NSTG) to see a recovery in early 2015?

Q: Best wishes to all, your family and friends. What does goodwill really mean on a balance sheet? Can any value be ascribed to it, and if so, how is it calculated?
Thank you,

Q: Could you disclose what 5iresearch staff allowed to invest in, or typically invested in if not in companies rated by 5iresearch?

Could you disclose in responses to company questions, whether the respondent holds any position long or short in the security being commented on? A number of the companies recommended, viewed negatively and discussed in general are not covered by 5iresearch, and not subject to your 'no conflict' policy.
