Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I am a retired, conservative, dividend income investor and have 1/2 to 2/3 positions in each of these securities. I trim-add to my stocks when my asset allocation needs adjusting (recently topped up BCE, BNS). I am considering topping up these 4 stocks, but am fully aware that Tax Loss Selling Season will soon be in full swing. Having said that, all 4 of these stocks have already been beaten up a fair bit.

I know you are NOT a market timer, but does your crystal ball foresee further downside as we work our way through the next 2 months of Tax Loss Selling? Using TCL as an example, you just added 1% to your position. I am sure you must have had quite an internal 5iR discussion about "when" to add that position vs. your 10% cash position at that time and the need to deploy some of it. OR...is it as simple as...this stock has been beaten up so much, it has excellent value now, we know we can't time the bottom, so let's just buy it now?

Thanks...Steve

Q: Hi, I am looking for dividend paying stocks that also have the most upside share price potential in both the short and long term. Could you rate the above, best to last, and if you have any other suggestions, that would be greatly appreciated.
I am not overly concerned with sector allocation.
Many thanks.

Q: In my portfolio I work only on book cost basis. I do not take in consideration any gains unless I "crystalize" them. I am constantly following my cost base behaviour and act without hesitation if on any of my positions, I am down an amount that I consider unhealthy. I make a difference between terminal losses and temporary losses.
Reviewing Altagas for which so far I only have a small loss, I will appreciate your evaluation on the potential for a terminal loss (bankrupcy} and/or temporary losses, considering that I will sell anyway if my losses expand beyond my own comfort threshold.
Thanks

Q: Hello,
I liked Gary's question on Low Risk/high reward situation for ALA. I read a book by Mohnish Pabrai a great value investor who did very well by buying into low risk/high uncertainty situations which led the good companies to sell at well below market prices. Are there other companies out there in such a situation? Would TSGI fall in that category where the risk/reward looks very attractive? Thanks.

Q: I have held ALA for a long time - so long that I actually have a modest unrealized gain. The current yield of over 10% is obviously signalling something - either an expected dividend cut or a strong discount implying the market is not buying the picture presented by managment that shows strong growth and no problem sustaining and growing the divi. In my view then - the current stock price reflects all of the bad news that might happen - so there is very little downside at the current price. If a divi cut happens - there might be a short term decline from the current price but the stock should recover to a level with associated yield that is peer competitive. If on the other hand - the market buys the growth story - we should see substantial price appreciation from current levels - no divi cut and a repricing which also results in a peer competitive divi. So at the current price - very limited downside and signficant upside. Do you agree?

Q: Considering tax loss selling NFI and TCL (and possibly ALA) then waiting 30+ days to rebuy. Using TurboTax, the loss saves me 15%. Does your crystal ball foresee any quick rebound potential for these 3 stocks that would cause me to rethink this strategy? Thanks...Steve

Q: I am largely an income investor and hold the above stocks for their dividends. I am concerned that some of them may have high levels of debt and will be negatively impacted by higher interest rates. Can you advise which are the most and least indebted companies, and whether higher interest charges could threaten their dividends? Thanks.

Q: I have some questions on Altagas. Would a person be better to buy ACI later this month, because it should have better growth(propane export).
Also, If I were to buy Altagas now , is there not a fair chance of the dividend being cut, because of reduced cash flow(selling Canadian assets). Would you please comment on these aspects. Will ACI have a dividend and how much.
TSGI I was thinking of selling for tax purposes and would like to buy back after 30 days.. Do you know when the next report will be out, I thought perhaps in the middle of Nov.. Thanks in advance Love your service Earl

Q: I own the following in a non-registered account. (I own growth stocks in my TFSA, and US/international equities and Canadian bonds in my RRSP). The goal is to DRIP the following stocks in my non-registered account until I retire and then use the income only to cover some monthly expenses.
CPD; BNS; SLF; FTS; ENB; ALA; BCE; CHP.UN; NWH.UN; VET; NWC; and EIF.
Do you have any concerns with any of these companies long term?

Q: Hi guys,
I have to admit, what Altagas is doing here isn't all that clear and I have the following email from RBC Direct Investing just moments ago, so am concerned this will drag the (already beaten up) stock lower, at least in the short term. Your thoughts are, as always, most welcome!

"RBC Direct Investing TM. would like to inform you that the following New Issue has just been announced.

AltaGas Canada Inc

Short Description: Initial Public Offering of Common Shares
Price: $15.50 to $18.00
Settlement: Expected week of October 22, 2018."

Thanks,
Dawn
