Q: Hi Peter and talented gang.
I think I made a mistake and purchased Gib in US funds. The Canadian GIB.A is trading @.42 higher.I wanted to increase my US holdings and as there is no div., it seemed like a good idea.Would you syuggest and sell in the US and buy in Canadian funds.Thank you Phyl in BC
Q: Thanks for all your help, 5i. Would appreciate re-visiting CHE.UN, last commented on in January. How does a modest (less than 2.5%) position in this look, for the next 16 to 24 months? Thanks, Bill
Q: Hi, I have not done well with HNL. Bought some near 8 and again near 6 but still underwater. I have read your comments about losing a contract awile back, hold for yield, but it is hard to watch it continue to drop! It is fortunately not a great portion of my portfolio, but I continue to question the hold/sell equation. Thoughts?
Q: Just a comment re Amaya's earnings. I believe they said at the conference call that they would report in April so that the last quarter of 2012 and the first of 2013 could be compared. Also I believe they said they would give guidance for the whole year at that time. I wonder if the pullback is because the Revel Casino in Atlantic City has filed for bankruptcy protection although one company in difficulty should not bother a whole industry. Joe
Q: ACQ - Autocanada
Do you have any idea why the volume is so high today with Autocanada? The stock price is up nearly 5% today. I can't see any news that supports this volume and price increase.
I own Health Lease properties (HLP.UN) at roughly 3% of my portfolio. It is down from my purchase price but at current prices and yield it looks pretty good to me. And I am thinking of buying more. What do you think of the recently announced acquisition and its prospects going forward. Thanks
Q: The December 2012 AYA results were anticipated. Now that they are late the stock is starting to come off. Expect that this may mean bad news coming. Just a guess.
Q: I own LONESTAR WEST and have done well by it. Do you have an opinion about it. I have doubled my capital in the last year and wonder if I should keep it still.
THKU I love 5I BTW : )
Q: Hi. I have a few questions concerning buying a convertible bond ETF. There appears to be only one choice, iShare’s CVD, which is an advantaged fund. An apparent alternative, PCD.UN which is also advantaged, will probably be wound up either in September 2014 or earlier. I have several questions.
(1) Is there an alternative way to hold a fund of convertibles while staying away from Canada’s rapacious mutual fund industry.
(2) Both CVD and PCD.UN are trending downwards fairly steeply (for fixed income funds) over the last few months. Is this a good time to be buying convertibles?
(3) CVD will have to at least restructure when the government legislates against such tax avoidance funds. Does this increase the short to medium term risk?
(4) Presumably CVD will have a higher (but fully taxable) yield by about 0.5-0.75% once they restructure since the forward structure costs will disappear. Is this a valid presumption?
Q: Hello, would you buy BDI or HNL or a split between the two at these levels. I have no current exposure to the names and very little exposure to the oil service sector and my investment time horizon is 5 years + . Thank you.
Q: In answering Maida's question "was short selling putting downward pressure on JE?" you noted that there were only 7.8 million shares sold short. On BNN yesterday when interviewing Andrew McCreath, Andrew made the point that when you include the US exchange that 30% of the float (issued shares less insider owned shares)had been shorted.
Given the current dividend, isin't this an expense stock to short? Might the shorts get squeezed, especially if JE ramps up its share buy-back?
Q: Please comment on Ithaca Energy's 2012 progress report that was released this morning. They seem to be doing well but the stock remains undervalued in some opinions. How do you feel about this company. Thank you for the valued insight. Joe
