Q: In most of your replies to questions about Fortis, you emphasized that the utility was fine for income but not to expect much in the way of capital gains. In 2014, the company's shares rose almost 30%! With 20-20 hindsight, can you explain the contradiction and can you tell me if the driver(or drivers)for that solid gain will still in place for 2015?

Q: Hi. I gather that you are not real big on Rogers, neither am I now, as I own a position in my RRSP that is currently down 15%. I have been planning on just sitting on it and hoping it would come back up 15%. But I wonder if it would be a better stratagey to just sell out and invest the money in something that may have a chance to recover that 15%? Thank you and all the best in the New Year.

Q: A portfolio manager on BNN this week suggested that Hi Yield Bonds will outperform the TSX on a total return in 2015. My portfolio is 60% fixed income and 40% equity. The fixed income is equal parts GIC ladder, CBO and PHN Hi Yield Bond Fund [ RBF 1280 ].

To shelter the fixed income capital from a spike in interest rates I am considering selling CBO and buying 1 year GIC's. I will keep the hi yield bond fund because the higher yield will offset the loss in capital, I hope. The duration of the bond fund is 2.3 years.

Do you agree with my proposal or can you suggest an alternative?

Happy New Year to the 5i Team and all the members.

Q: Question: I hold TIMBERCREEK SENIOR MORTGAGE INVESTMENT CORP(MTG:TSX, CA) for income within my RRSP. I am down 12%, although the price has been more stable in the last year. Can you please comment on this company and give me your opinion as to whether it is a reasonable income stock for RRSP?

Q: I would like to buy a stock for my TFSA in January 2015 that will have a good chance of having a large gain and long term growth. I am thinking about beaten up stocks like BDI, CPG or Cos. What would you recommend?

Q: Bearing in mind your earlier view that a small position in DCI is acceptable for income, my 1,700 shares have climbed 20% since early November, a very good return.
Should I sell and realize the gain or hang in there for the 8% dividend and potentially even higher gains?

Q: Hello Peter and team, all the best of the seasdon to you and thanks for all of your sage responses this past year!!

Chorus has been out of the news lately after their successful bout with AC. They pay a nice dividend and have a fair chunk of change on the books I understand. Do you think a special dividend is on the horizon and what is your overall view of the company, especially with dropping fuel prices.

Thank you
Jerry

Q: Hi Peter & 5i: Can you please give me your current assessment of Calian? I do not own it now but I have in the past. They seem to fly under the radar mostly. I know they are a very low volume trader, have a very small float, small market cap, and they have some history of share buybacks. I also know that they are substantially dependent on government contracts. With the shares under $18 and the dividend over 6% again, I am thinking about buying a small position but I am wondering if there is anything of particular concern on their horizon, apart from their 'regular concerns' that is. Thanks very much and the Best of the Season to all at 5i!

Q: I own SLF and plan to hold it through the pending interest rate increases. I also hold VNR, ZUT and ZWB each at a small profit. Would you continue to hold these latter 3 much longer and risk a price slide? Thanks.
