Q: I'm puzzled by the enthusiasm for this sector. Besides Government regulation, what are the barriers to entry ? What makes medical marijuana farming any different than regulated tomato farming?

I have serious reservations regarding this sector. Companies with the "hope" of producing earnings at a future point in time but with very little certainty. It looks like an arms race. Get as big as you can as fast as you can, and use other people's money because they don't know what the price of their product will be when the market becomes saturated.

What will stop people from getting a bucket of soil and seeds to grow their own?

So why would shareholders pay six-figure salaries to glorified tomato farmers who have yet to prove that they can generate steady cash-flows?

This sector reminds me of the TSX-V in 2007, people mortgaging their principal residence to buy penny stocks of jr mining companies with names they couldn't pronounce. It's like investment fantasy land, drawing novice investors in hordes. When you start to receive marijuana stock tips from cab drivers and hotdog vendors, you'll know it's time to exit.

Anyone looking to buy these stocks should really evaluate what type of investor they are before committing to the weed sector. Fast money can produce fast crashes when the money runs out.

Q: I feel as if I have owned Apple forever! I am now down 20% on the stock and just about ready to throw in the towel. Can you suggest a replacement in the same space with more growth potential? SIMO perhaps, which you have recommended before?

Q: Hi Peter & Ryan, not many companies report earnings on Fridays after the markets are closed for the weekend. Fiera Capital has just indicated their earnings release will be on Friday August 5th after the close with their conference call being held 3 days later on Monday August the 8th. I don't recall many companies reporting after the close on Friday but the few I remember doing so did not release good results. Am I being paranoid or do we holders of Fiera Capital have reason to be nervous? Your thoughts... Thanks. Mario.

Q: Further to your earlier answer yesterday, you referred to the payout ratio as still being high. My impression is that they have been lowering it over the last 2 or 3 years. I seem to recall it is in the 70's percent-wise, having been in the 90's. If my memory is correct (no guarantees here!), this shows very positive improvement, in line with the targets espoused by their CEO in previous calls.
Would you be able to tell me what the payout ratio is currently (based on cash flow, I assume), and also indicate how you are calculating it from the numbers off of the statements? I am particularly interested in knowing the adjustments you make, and your reasoning.
(This, I hope, falls into the category of not just giving me fish, but teaching me HOW to fish!)
Also, at least one other analyst doesn't get the seasonality of their quarterly statements (they have a slow period - the summer - when the kids aren't on the bus)and keeps referring to the falling profitability without due consideration. Do you refer to yearly stats when calculating payout ratios and such, or if not, what adjustments do you make to the statements regarding seasonality?
Thanks!
