Highliner (HLF) having a big down day. Has there been any material change or is it just some year end profit taking?

Q: I believe I have read that it is unwise to purchase mutual funds in december because they allocate certain amounts that accumulate over the year therefore you could be in for a capitol gain or other tax liability that you did note participate in. I have two funds left to liquidate as a result of moving all my accounts to a discount broker and reallocating resources to individual stocks and ETFs.
Is there any advantage to selling these two funds now to avoid this year end fund activity? I would be doing so early in the new year anyway.
Thank you so much for an educational and profitable year. All the best for the Season and 2014 to the 5i team and members.

Q: A really general question but could you provide a prognostication/guess on the January markets in general. Do you foresee a major shift to the downside and should investors be more defensive than usual.
About 80% of my names are good dividend payers....but I have a few that would suffer when the tide goes out.

Q: Hi 5i team,Happy holidays: I need to add 5% for a total of 40% fixed income portfolio (retired). Choice between CPD & XHY. Am I wrong to believe that CPD will do badly whereas XHY will do okay in a rising interest world? The balance is CBO & GIC...ladder 1/2/3yrs

Q: Good morning.
I own shares in Brookfield Asset Management (rated Pdf2 low) and Brookfield Renewable Energy (rated Pdf3 high) perpetual preferred shares (BAM.PF.C & BRF.PR.F). These shares are trading at deeper discounts than other company preferred shares with the same ratings.
May I have your opinion regarding the Brookfield and the Brookfield Renewable credit ratings and can you think of any reason why the subject shares trade at a deeper discount to the others?
Many thanks in advance for your consideration and time.

Q: Thank you for your invaluable service. I have deployed some of my Coastal Energy proceeds and purchased BEP.UN, TCN, FSZ, and AVO. My question: As 2013 is rapidly coming to a close could you provide your top 3 stocks for 2014 - one selection based on income, one for growth, and one based on moderate "spec".
Best wishes and good health to everyone in the new year.

Could you give your opinion on the big streaming companies (Franco Nevada- FNV-T and Silver Wheaton- SLW-T) with a perspective of 5 years. Would you prefer them to the producers?

Q: SPH - Superior propane. I could not find any questions on this one. It has a nice yield, is off its highs for the year. Would you recommend this stock as a yield play or both a yield and growth story.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Q: Hi,
Based on the previous posts, looks that you like the potential of TKM. With more than half the value of the company in cash and a good pipeline, would you recommend buying the company. How risky do you think the company is on a risk spectrum ranging from very low to very high risk. Thanks

Q: CSS has been on a downward trajectory (down over 10%) since it announced it was acquiring Best Transfer. Is this an indication of investor dissatisfaction or is it just profit taking - seems like a large draw-down for "just profit taking". Is this a concern or is it a good buying opportunity?
Q: I have traded XIV several times over the last 2 years and done quite well. While it has some violent swings the trend over the last 2 years in up. What is the risk to holding this for several years?
Q: Peter, my question is on Brookfield Renewable. As an A rated company I have bought it on and off for the last two and a half years. Not counting dividends my share average price is down 6%. Do you expect the share price to rise a lot over the next years, to rate such a high rating? I now have a considerable amount in BEP. Thanks Ken
Q: What's your opinion on DFN-T. Certainly a high dividend but is it sustainable over time?
