Q: Do we know when the Carfinco deal will be closing?
Would like to receive Special dividend, but also would like to have cash to deploy as the market pulls back. Any timeframe?

Shareholders voted by 70 percent to approve the two share classifications as of Oct 6 There will be DHX.A for Variable Voting Shares (original shares owned by non-Canadians) and DHX.B for Common Voting shares ( original shares owned by Canadians) I am Canadian so my shares will be converted to DHX.B
What impact do you think this will have on the market price and volume of DHX.B shares?
Since their stated intent is to attract foreign investors who obviously can only buy DHX.A . How can this possibly be good for my share value? or am I missing something?

Q: Today, Reuters (Mike Dolan) published a piece "Financial Market Storm Brewing.." and the last paras stated:

"If investors are surprised by financial storm, it won't be because they weren't warned. Financial watchdogs have been waving a red flag about overstretched markets for the past year and stressed concerns again this month.

"There are increased signs of complacency in financial markets, in part reflecting search for yield amidst exceptionally accommodative monetary policies," the Bank governor Mark Carney said last week, citing conclusions of the G20's Financial Stability Board which he chairs.

"Volatility has become compressed and asset valuations stretched across a growing number of markets, increasing the risk of a sharp reversal."

Particularly because of Mark Carney's comments, this caught my attention. Any thoughts on how this might play out?

Q: Och Ziff (OZM.us) has been plunging in recent weeks, and got beaten up a lot more this week. Markets appear to have been priced in the litigation risks OZM faces: class action suits; corruption charges; and misdemeanors in southern Africa). I have checked some financial sites, including key news sources in London and Frankfurt.

I have some OZM in an RSP . It was selected as a 2014 pick in January by Sabrient. Sabrient and its affiliate Gradient Analytics are generally good, notwithstanding they got this one wrong.

With the price drop in OZM , its dividend yield now screens sky high. Industry wags (T-Reuters, Research Team, Value Engine and 2 analyst houses I looked) still rate OZM as a buy.

OZM price and now looks too good to be true. One gets an uneasy feeling about it, but I don’t see any new info that wasn’t already in the public domain a month ago.

If you are able to comment on OZM, I would appreciate it very much.

Q: This is more a general question that a company specific one. Tax loss selling has been mentioned a lot recently and while I know what it is,I don't know how (if?) I can it to my advantage, as I have only had registered money up until now.

From the conversations, it would appear that we should expect a lot of selling around stocks that have fallen quite a bit - AVO, BDI, BAD to name a few. I am down on these stocks too but I am committed to hanging on for several months yet. But is there a value in selling them to realize a loss and buy them back in 31 days as there is little likelihood they will rise in that short time or is that too much like gambling on market timing?

Also, it seems that this activity occurs in the late fall. Why? You can claim the loss at any point in the year so why does it seem to concentrate then?

Finally, if all this selling is expected to occur, is there a way to take advantage of it?

Q: GE seems to be divesting its low margin businesses and becoming more of an industrial company again. I would expect a smaller and more profitable GE going forward. It's PE is below the general market and pays a good dividend. Is this a pound the table buy considering its fundatmentals and growth profile?

Q: More of a comment than a question Sept is now behind us and in review of my portfolio I took a bit of a spanking on my energy stocks about 13% but on balance only down about 3% in total which if this was a correction I did ok .My frustration when I talk to the people at wcp sgy bte their hedging is excellent were as wcp is hedged out for the balance of the year 95%@$99 a barrel what could put a company this well managed under so much downward pressure ?

Q: Hello Peter, I have new cash in my already-diversified RRSP. I have a moderate risk tolerance and am seeking long-term growth in plan value (whether the growth is from dividends or gains.) I currently have half positions in BIP.UN, BPY.US, CVE, CCO, CJR.B, ECA, POT and WIN. Can you please suggest which two or three of these to 'top up'. And if you would suggest jettisoning any of these completely, please share your thoughts.
