Q: I am wondering about the timing of tax loss selling for individual investors. I know that this year it has to be done on or before Dec 24. I wonder if its best to wait until the last week so as not to get caught in the downdraft of tax loss selling of large institutional investment companies. Is there any "basic strategies" you can suggest?
I have a few I'm considering : sell PPL/buy TRP. sell AFN/ buy AGU, sell MG/buy MRE, sell CS/buy LUN (or stay away from commodities)

Q: The MInimum Rate-Reset Preferred Shares BEP.PR.G, ALA.PR.I, BAM.PF.H, CU.PR.I seem almost to good to be true. They offer rate resets that are a 100 bps or higher than the previously issued rate reset shares of the same companies as well as a guaranteed yield of 4.5 to 5.5%. The only caveat I have been able to find is that the distribution is projected to be composed of 50% eligible Canadian dividend, 25% income and 25% return of capital (http://prefblog.com/?cat=14). How and when would the return of capital be taxed in a non registered account? Would the return of capital diminish the redemption price of the shares? What percent of a fixed income portfolio would allocate to this type of security?

Q: I currently own G in a non-RRSP and it is the only gold stock that I own. Would you recommend a sale on this stock for tax loss purposes that can be off set with a capital gain of another stock? Would you be a buyer of any gold stock at this time?

Q: I bought it in Feb. 2015 at $85 only to see low of $67 in the summer. I am still holding it, but ... what are the prospects of recovering and going to $85-$90 ? I read that the high US $ is hurting their EPS because lots of their products are sold in overseas locations, any light at the end of the tunnel ?

Q: I have a TFSA account and want to sell WestJet but not sure what I should replace the stock with. I currently also own Stanec in this sector. My sector allocations are appropriate except for: 0% Consumer Staples, 12% Industrial (after sale), 8% Tech. Which sector and stock would you recommend that I put the money toward to after the sale of WestJet?

Q: Hello Peter & Team,

I did very well with SPY (now BKD) when I bought it in Feb around $0.34 and sold it in May @ $0.61. I've continued to track it and noticed the article at the beginning of this week mentioning their new app for Yahoo Fantasy which allows fantasy Players to automatically get updates on their players without looking them up individually.

Fantasy is huge and only getting bigger. I play fantasy football and their application is a very handy idea.

At $0.24 today which is up 25% since last week, would you consider BKD a sell, hold or buy at this time? And is there anything else I should know before re-entering a position?

Q: The Globe had a link to an article that described US shale oil producers as facing a "debt bomb" due to low oil prices, declining cash flow and high debt. The article predicts a serious meltdown in the first half of 2016. My question relates to the impact this could have on US banks? My ETF has been doing ok, and I expect banks to be favoured by rising interest rates. I suppose this question could be extended to other commodity areas and Canadian banks as well. Do you see significant risk in banking in the near term due to debt failure? Thanks

Q: Hi Peter and Gang,

I currently have positions in CSU and GIB.A and they represents 2.5% and 3.5% of my portfolio respectively. My gains on CSU are approximately 220% and I am thinking of liquidating my entire CSU position and put the proceeds on DH (I'll stay put on GIB.A). Just wondering what your thoughts are on this move.

On November 17, in your response to a question raised by a 5i member on DH, you commented that the stock was 14x earning, is this ratio still accurate?

Q: Hi folks,I know FM/t has app $6B debt I believe but was wondering if they are near any debt covenants any time soon,I heard that was reason acq/t had to raise money as they were near breaking some debt covenants.
