Q: I'm looking to invest $60,000 for a minimum of 5 years. This money will be used towards a downpayment for a house. Can you please comment on a split of 50% SPY and 50% quality stocks, such as GOOG, MSFT, SLF, ATD, BN. Also can you please suggest some additional stock ideas that are fairly conservative for a 5 year hold. Thanks!

Q: Hi 5i Team,

I am trying to understand how RETURN of Capital works on ETF.

Eg: Buy 1000 shares at 14 = 14000 and get 8% dividend.
Sell 1000 shares after a year at 15 = 15000. So Total return is 15% return on my investment. (8% dividend plus 1K capital gain = 7%)

Please advise if the above calculation is correct or is it the original investment minus 8% dividend.

Thanks for the great service

Q: Hi 5i Team - I am interested in buying more U.S. stocks and have a non-registered U.S. dollar account as well as a TFSA account in Canadian dollars. Are there any concerns over buying U.S stocks in the TFSA account? eg. Are U.S. capital gains and dividends still tax exempt in a the TFSA. Any advice as to preferences re which account to use would be appreciated.

Q: Hi,

This is a BIG picture question. I don't see any questions so far on 5i.

First Japan apparently makes an about turn in their interest rates? The articles that I read went above my head! And now Fitch downgrades the US credit rating. Again too much for me to understand.

What does it all mean to ordinary people like me? Many of my friends who are all seniors mostly say, cash is King!

I know you like to be fully invested.

Any words of wisdom?
Many thanks in advance.

Mano.

Q: Hi there, there are many "all in one" etfs to pick from these days. If a person wanted to have a super simple portfolio, what would be your favourite (or the best) ETF to hold to gain 100% equity exposure that would require the least amount of maintenance? I know there is XEQT, VEQT, XAW, VXC, XWD, HGRO and many more. What would be your favourite? (Does not have to appear on the ones I have listed)

Thanks!

Q: Hi 5i Team - Could you suggest a few cyber security stocks, Canadian and U.S., including established companies that are profitable as well as two or three newer ones that show some promise but may or may not be profitable yet. Any market cap is fine. Thanks.

Q: In 2015 your growth portfolio was down 4.8% and your income portfolio was down 5.5% as a result I would have expected your balanced portfolio to have declined yet it was up 9.5%
Could you explain that outperformance?

Q: Could you give some suggestions for Canadian companies with a growth profile that pay a div you would hold in a TSFA.
