Q: I have a $100,000 GIC coming due and do not plan to renew it. I plan to put $90,000 of it into the market. I like stocks with some growth combined with a decent dividend. I already have a well diversified portfolio. Would you please suggest some stocks that you would currently recommend.

I would like your opinion on the best tactic for growth in the following scenario. In an RRSP account, I have CDZ, SGY, and SYZ
shares , no one position large enough to benefit from the DRIP if available. With new money is it better to increase each position to allow for the DRIP benefit or is it better to diversify with a couple of more stocks, if so which would you suggest and not worry about the DRIP possibility.

Q: Could you comment on BAU,Bauer as along term hold,and what effect the listing and name change on the New York exchange will have going forward.

Q: Should the internals of the market start deteriorating (preferably before then), what could DIY investors do, to protect their portfolios, aside from correct/smart asset allocation? Would buying inverse ETFS help and if so, could you recommend any for the TSX and S&P? Or if there is a better way, hope you share with us. (I am a survivor of the 2008-2009 crisis before being a DIY, thus the apprehension)

Q: Hello hello...This question has been asked in the past. But at this point in time, what are the growth-eee stocks you would suggest for at new TSFA, with $30,500. From a length of time to hold, I'm interest in letting the stocks do there thing. And about other stocks that are held in other accounts, this is not a factor for diversification purposes. Q: I see that the daily twice fixing of gold bullion price at the London Stock Exchange, managed by five big Banks, might get phased out. How will it affect the price of gold bullion, if that happens. Do you think John Embry is right in saying that price of gold has been suppressed for a long time. I am only interested in buying a little bit of CEF.A. Your advice please.

Q: I have about 20% of my portfolio sitting in cash waiting for opportunities. Also if there is a 10-20% correction in the market I feel like this gives me a chance to take advantage of the cheaper prices for good stocks while not taking on additional risk. My question is: is there a better place to keep the money perhaps where I could earn some interest/divs and which might even go up during a correction yet is fairly liquid? Thanks. Great service.

Q: Hi Team,

I bought XSR just after the special div announcement anticipating it to go up. However, it bearly budged and has now fallen more than the actual dividend payment. Do you think it is worth holding or should I sell and replace it with something else and what could those stock replacements be. Thanks

Hello Peter :

I am confused as to which sector in which to classify certain companies which I own. The S&P/TSX lists a lot as "Energy" but you seem to classify some as "Utilities".

It seems important to know which are Utilities and which are Energy because as you said to Gord today, for example : "Altagas. As a utility, it should act quite differently from the oil and gas holdings, and may provide more diversification and balance to your portfolio."

Which of these are Utilities and which are Energy? : ENB, ENF, TRP, PPL, PKI, PSK, BNE, BTE

Where would you classify BIP.UN, and BDT ?

I would really appreciate it if you could please classify these for me. What maximun Secor weighting would you place on Utilities and on Energy in a large well diversified income portfolio.

Q: I have uninvested US funds. Would like to invest in an US dividend Aristocrats ETF. In this regard would you prefer NOBL yielding 2.28% (MER .35%) with 54 Companies and appear to follow the S&P Dividend Aristocrat Index or the HDV yielding 3.26% (MER .40%) with 75 Companies. If you do not like either of these, do you have other alternatives?

Interestingly, BlacRock US website indicate that a new Core Dividend Growth ETF (DGRO) is expected to be launched on June 12, 2014. There are no facts as of yet except the MER will be .12% and the objective of this ETF "seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of U.S. equities with a history of consistently growing dividends."

Q: I would appreciate your comparison of Enerplus (ERF) and Whitecap (WCP). I have done well by ERF but RBC's recent downgrade on the basis of its price appreciation makes me wonder if the growth prospects for WCP might be appreciably better. There would be no tax consequences to me of making such a switch and the dividends are similar. I look forward to your reply.

Q: I have noticed alcoa (aa) and a french company has been testing and promoting an electric car battery that extends a vehicle range up to 1800 kms. There has been some talk of creating a plant in Quebec. I have looked into the technology and it seems they do have something that has the potential to be enormous and could propel electric vehicles into main stream. I understand Ford is involved also. Do you have any opinion on this new battery and alcoa and if this is a good entry point? Thank you Dave T.

Q: XTR - I noticed one of your responses concerning this fund in which you state, among other things, "a diversified income fund like XTR are similar but you will pay more in fees as all of your allocation will be exposed to the fee vs a portion of the model"

However, I am not sure this is correct - the prospectus relating to the fund fees indicates "the management fees will be adjusted to reflect the fees paid on the underlying funds held in the fund to ensure the total fees paid will not exceed the indicated management fee"
