I would like to know your choice between Canacord CF and Fiera FSZ for a three years hold. I am looking for capital gain and growth.
Thank you again for your your excellent service.
Q: You have mentioned that owing about a 5% position in a gold stock is good insurance for a long term portfolio. I already own a 5% position in Teck. Even though they are not a gold producer, is this similar to owning a gold stock or should I also buy a gold producer and increase my overall weighting to 10% in what I think of as the materials sector?
I like buying stocks when there is capitulation and everyone is rushing to get out. Often then the stock is oversold and the market is over pessimistic. BB and BAC are 2 stocks I bought close to the bottom. Do you have any model to screen for BIG names stocks that make good contrarian play? Recently, I bought Weight Watchers and I wrote a puts on BIG LOTS. Both have sold off and the business is trying to turnaround and success is uncertain. However do you think that the risk justify the potential reward based on valuation?
Thanks in advance.
Q: Could you comment on stop loss orders: when to use them, when not to use them, how much of a loss in percentage terms would you use (and would it depend on market capitalization or sector of the company), how long to have them in place, how frequently to review them and adjust them, using technical analysis to find support levels, etc. Some investors have told me they don’t use stop losses on stocks they plan to keep forever (e.g. Canadian bank stocks).
I would like to put some stop losses on my “riskier” stocks (SGY, WCP, CPG, TBE, DR, PPL) and I am wondering if a 10% to 15% stop loss from current levels is OK. I have had some of these stocks for a while and have gains up to 33%, and some are recent acquisitions and are break even.
Can you also comment on this article from the Toronto Star about never using stop loss orders to sell stock:
Q: I bought Suncor (SU) a few years ago and it went down about 40%, but this year it is doing much better. I'm only down about 13% and it is continuing to improve. Do you think I should continue to hold this long term or should I be swapping it for another stook in the same sector like tourmaline?
Q: I'd appreciate your thoughts on Brookfield Infrastructure Partners LP (BIP.UN. I've held it for a few years in a TFSA and have done quite well, but it seems to have stalled somewhat.
Q: What is your opinion about WCP(whitecap resources)Everybody admires it but stock itself is not doing well.Is it worth holding ?.Thank you and have a good day-Ebrahim
