Q: Just wondering what you think of the purchase of ObjectVideo's patents. I think your original thought was that AVO would use cash to make an acquisition. ObjectVideo appears to be a private corp and perhaps not available for acquisition although they would seem to have made a good fit.
Does $80m for patent purchases advance your investment thesis as well as an acquisition?

Q: Hello,
I have 60K that I'm not sure what do with. If I invest the money I will get back 46% from the good old government. That seems like the right choice but I'm considering paying down my mortgage.If you had a choice between paying down your mortgage (no penalty)or investing your money long term what would be your choice be at this time.

Q: I'd like to initiate a long position in the oil and gas sector, but am hesitant to do so by picking individual stocks. Are you able to recommend two ETFs with a focus on oil and gas? I'm looking for one with exposure to NA Junior producers, and one with exposure to a mix of oil related companies (producers, explorers, services, etc).

Barring that, perhaps you can think of a mix of 5 stocks I could buy to make my own mini ETF with the above considerations.

Q: Hi There
I'm trying to understand this rate reset, of which I hold a modest amount. Current price and yield is $17.6 and 6.7%. Reset date is March 2015. Reset rate is ~4% (2.7+1.3). New dividend will be ~$1 ie 5.7% yield on current price. Is it simply that this is the new yield value the market has put on this perpetual? If so, why the drop in a potential rising interest rate environment? Perhaps the credit risk has reduced.

Q: Maxim Integrated ( MXIM.us) :
I have a small position in MXIM. Some shares were left over 9 years ago from a sell order that was only filled partially. The holding represents just 0.25% of the portfolio. I suppose I should therefore either sell MXIM , or buy more. I could also leave well enough alone.

Q: Further to Steve's recent question re: "foreign" allocation, your answer was 15 - 20%. My question is, would this number be "ex-U.S." or do you include the U.S. within the "foreign" category? For myself, I tend to view the markets as Canada, U.S. and Foreign (or World, Global, etc., with Emerging Markets being a sub-sector of that.) If this figure is "ex - U.S., then what would the U.S. % be that you would recommend given Steve's criteria?

Q: Hi, I read your last answer on Northern Blizzard. Since then it is much lower similar to many other O&G stocks. In light of this, and ignoring the fact that it is a newer company, can you please compare this company to others with a high dividend commonly talked about here (e.g. WCP, SGY, TBE, PWT) with regards to:

- Quality of Management
- Current valuation
- Safety of dividend
- Level of debt/safety
- Growth potential

Q: Good afternoon. With Russia pursuing drastic measures (selling crown jewels) in an attempt to keep things under control, they are sure to be selling their gold reserves as well. How much of an impact would this have on gold prices, and would it be best to be out of gold in the mean time, or will the implosion of the Russian Ruble (and contagion to other markets) actually be a good thing for gold?

My only gold exposure at the moment is a 1% holding in Goldcorp.

Q: Hi Peter and Team - I agree with yesterday's positive response to a question on Argonaut Gold. I have a concern that according to Ink Insider Research there has been no buying (perhaps balanced off by no selling either) by insiders in this company for some time and their holdings in general appear to be quite low. Should this be a concern? Also would the reports that have access to support the above statement re insider holdings?

Q: I participated in a class action suit re: Zungui Haixi and today received a my settlement cheque which surprisingly amounted to about 20 cents for each dollar lost. The stock was originally held in my TFSA so that is where all the loss occurred. Can you tell me if there is any way to attribute the settlement funds back in to my TFSA without it counting towards my annual contribution?

Q: I would like to use the Income strategy for my portfolio in 2015. Do you have a recommended approach when adding positions?
Should I simply buy all positions on the first day of trading in 2015? Should I dollar cost average into positions over some time frame?
