Q: Hello 5i,
I’m not happy with Canadian Oil Sands (cos) and Ensco PLC (ESV) in my portfolio and would like to sell for less volatile names. On the Canadian side I’m looking at buying Vermilion Energy (VET) or Pembina Pipeline (PPL) or possibly Enerplus Corp (ERF). On the US side Kinder Morgan (KMI) or China Petroleum & Chemical (SNP) or Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.B.

What do you think of this move and which ones are your favorites.

Q: What do you think of the recent bought-deal by Chemtrade, which appears to be mainly for debt repayment? Good thing or bad? I hold about a 2.5% position, for income and am considering bumping this up to 3%.

Q: I've held this stock for the past couple of years and am pleased it's performed so well. With it having hit annual/lifetime highs is it too late to purchase more? What do you see as it's future prospects and do you plan on writing a report on it anytime?

Q: I hold Sylogist as 5.6% of my portfolio, with a nice healthy gain (yesterday's price) of 47.7%. (Thank you!) Having hit its all time high in the early fall at $12, it can never seem to push beyond that. Is it time to claim profits and re-assign the very healthy profits to another more growth-oriented stock, or do you foresee impending catalyst to take this stock higher?

In another semi-related matter, I find it difficult to wrap my mind around what is termed "Book Value". I assumed that Book Value meant the price you paid for the stock, factoring in the trading fees, for a net purchase value. I notice, however, that Book Value fluctuates, from week to week. Am I going cross-eyed, or is there a logical explanation for the floating values? Excuse my naivety on this one, but I'm honestly perplexed. Thanks, as always, for your valuable comments.

Q: Hi team, I already have a position in CSH.un Chartwell and was thinking of adding another position in a different company in the long term care space. I was trying to decided whether to chance EXE at these price levels or just take a position in LW whose stock price has held up rather well over the last couple few months. If you had to choose should I just add to CSH (less than 1% of my current portfolio) or take a position in one of the other LW or EXE. Opinions? As always thanks for your time.

Q: Your thoughts, please, on debentures trading at or below par. CUS, ENT, EIF, AHF, JE, LRE, RMM to name a few. Anything you like for straight yield? Debentures you've recommended previously all trade above par making them more equity-like than fixed-income like.

Q: With a diversified fixed income portfolio, which would you prefer:
Arits REIT AX.DB.U 5.75% 30-JUN-2018 Price:104.75, YTM:4.3%
Parland Fuel Bond 5.5% 28-May-2001 Price: 102.50, YTM: 5.2%
Also, an RRSP has to be converted to a RRIF in the year someone turns 71, do you have to withdraw that year, or is it the year in which you turn 72 that you have to start withdrawing?

Q: Until recently, BTE always won out over CPG for stock selection, and in early Sept. it still traded at a $3.50 premium over CPG. Now it trades $5 lower than CPG. What has happened? Is it time to kiss Baytex goodbye?

I own TD, T, Sun, MLF, PBH, CNR, CPR, ZLB, ZUH, GC, and BCI as well as higher growth US names like FB, DIS, SBUX. I'm looking for another canadian dividend payer with some growth (10%? Annually) and wonder if you feel the pipelines are reasonably priced and which you'd recommend?

Or another area/choice? I tend to avoid resources as they are too volatile for me.

Q: Upon analysis of my portfolio I found I need to increase my industrial holdings. 4% of my portfolio (my only holding is WSP).Since it might follow that lower energy prices should favour this sector, I would appreciate it if you could suggest a few companies. (both/either Canadian or American). Reasonable risk is acceptable and a decent dividend would be appreciated. As always, thanks in advance for your guidance.

I will be liquidity (100% cash) one of my accounts $350,000....20 stocks...most covered by 5i...AYA, ACQ,AVO,MG, CSU,MDA,T, VRX, ESL...I will be doing so prior to Dec 24...I know timing is impossible...but looking for guidance or suggestions on selling off portfolio over the next 5 weeks.

I own BTE, CPG, HWO, TOU, VET and WCP in the energy sector (10%) of my RRIF portfolio. I'm thinking of selling CPG (some profit) and BTE (some loss) and shifting the proceeds to the other 4; thus keeping the sector weighting intact.

Do you have a predetermined number of new reports you try to produce every year ? (understanding that updates to current reports is already time consuming)

With regard to taxes, I never claimed any deductions for the 5i annual fee. Could I add them all and expense it all against 2014 dividend income ?

Q: Further comments re: Nov 17 (M S) comment on DRIPs through TD Waterhouse (TDW). Per my phone call with TDW earlier this year, TDW purchases DRIPs either from treasury (ie: at the discount price) or at market price. Below are some examples TDW provided:
Treasury DRIPS: BNS (Bank of Nova Scotia), TD (TD Bank), T (Telus), WSP (WSP Global)
Market DRIPS: AD (Alaris Royalty), CGX (Cineplex), SGY (Surge Energy).
