Q: What are your thoughts about these comments posted by an analyst on BNN Bloomberg yesterday? Is it a speculative buy?

"Quarterhill was formerly called Wilan and owns an IP patent licensing portfolio that continues to generate lots of cash. The company has been using this cash to acquire companies in the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) industry. For example, they recently acquired ETC, which processes 17 per cent of all electronic toll lanes in the U.S. through its cloud-based platform, and they also acquired International Road Dynamics, a world leader in weight-in-motion technology and traffic data collection.
The exciting news in December is that Quarterhill announced a strategic review to sell its IP patent portfolio and become a pure play ITS company. We believe that the IP patent portfolio alone is worth what the stock is currently trading at now, and that the ITS business is worth at least another $2.50 per share. So, the stock should be trading at around $5 versus $2.60 today. We really like the upside on this stock and the fact that there is a big catalyst coming to unlock value."

Q: Peter and His Wonder Team
QTRH just completed a $50M Convertible Debenture. Please explain in laymans term a convertible debenture.
Please give the pros and cons of this transaction. The company seems to think it is positive but as an amateur I am not sure. Thanks...your professional objective insights are always of great assistance.

Q: I have been invested in this company for many years. I'm receiving a small dividend that was cut in half several years ago. Over the years they have changed their primary operation from a patent troll to an investment corporation. They even won a court case over Apple (patent infringements) but have yet to be compensated. Are you aware of any positive corporate actions that may make Quarterhill more investable over the next few years. They are reporting next week and I am concerned that things may not have gone as well
as expected. Would you continue to hold on or would you throw in the towel.

Q: Please provide your comments on their earnings. Do you see any potential for future growth? How likely is it that Apple will actually pay? I am thinking of selling and adding to Photon. Would this be a good move? Thank you.

Q: looking at this company I note that the cash position is strong. They are also supposed to be receiving money from the Apple settlement which then would give them roughly $230 million net of debt. this equates to about $2 per share. Seems like there is value here. Can you contribute anything that would poke holes in my thesis that right now might be a good time to buy?
Idle thoughts also have me wondering why Apple wouldn't just buy QTRH to gain access to their other patented technologies. They are already going tp be paying what amounts to about a third of the company value.

Q: Hello 5i team,
In a November 16th answer, you mentioned GSY, PHO, GH and QTRH as potential go private companies. What would make them « ripe » (ready) to be bought? What characteristics (size? Slowing growth?) would help to know that a go private transaction might happen let’s say in the next year? I am surprised you included GSY (starting soon auto financing) and PHO (some new management recently) on your short list as they seem to still have growth avenues and no financing problems.
Thank you for your collaboration, Eric
