Q: What's your thoughts on PHM.v? Revenue growth has been explosive this year and they just issued another LOI to acquire a company with 8 million in revenue. Roll-ups can't go on forever and this pace is not sustainable without profits.
Q: I pulled the trigger last week on LMT. Stock has been rock'n. How is the valuation on NOC? Do you have preferred stock in the sector? What would be an appropriate weighting for aerospace/defense in this part of the market cycle?
Q: would appreciate a comment on SGL and EGL.un after their recent deal. Thanks and Best for a Merry Christmas.
Q: Hi Peter & 5i: Can you please give me your current assessment of Calian? I do not own it now but I have in the past. They seem to fly under the radar mostly. I know they are a very low volume trader, have a very small float, small market cap, and they have some history of share buybacks. I also know that they are substantially dependent on government contracts. With the shares under $18 and the dividend over 6% again, I am thinking about buying a small position but I am wondering if there is anything of particular concern on their horizon, apart from their 'regular concerns' that is. Thanks very much and the Best of the Season to all at 5i!
Q: FOX appears to be breaking out. How is the valuation? Do you like sector and/or the stock? Merry Christmas. Thanks for all your hard work, Don
Q: This question is about tax loss selling & possible re-buying in 31 days. Legacy Oil & Gas; I am now down 82.25% (Bought at $12.45, today's price $2.21). I read about their high debt in the Dec. 14 post by Yanick. This makes me nervous. Assuming I could use some tax loss to offset gains, would it be best to sell this stock? Is this a company worth re-buying in Jan. or later, although most of my capital is gone? Are there some other oil, gas or energy stocks that it be far wiser to buy? My goal is decent growth and dividends in a non-reg. portfolio. Holding period, 5+ years. Same question re Whitecap (WCP), where I'm down 24%. (Bought at $15.4849, today's price $11.75) Thank you.
Q: What is your current opinion of MCB.
Thanks,
Bill.
Thanks,

Q: I guess I bought cf at the top. Down 45 per cent. It seems excessive since they just paid a special dividend on top of the regular dividend. I know it is partly due to oil and gas but would they not make a lot of money through mergers of oil companies next year?Hopefully I learnt my lesson ie I have way too much in oil and gas related companies as a percentage of my portfolio stuck now to wait for the next up cycle. Or maybe when my portfolio review comes up I will be advised to dump and start over lol.
Q: Hi, I purchase Longrun Convirtible Debentures 1-2 years ago. The current price on them is well under 100. I don't expect capital gain of course, but how much risk is there to losing capital on these? Could they default or don't I need to worry about it? Along that vein, could some oil company CD's be undervalued right now, and how would you find a bargain versus ones with high risk?
Q: I have held a small position in this for the gold play which has not played out in 2014. Can I have your opinion as to whether I should sell for tax loss or hold
Thanks and look forward to your reply.

Q: Hello Peter,
I am interested in buying the VGG, but you have been recommending the VIG.
What would be the advantage of getting the VIG. VGG seems to track the same index, is in cdn dollars and is not hedged.
Thank you

Q: Hello Peter
I cannot seem to find an etf in the Pharma/healthcare industry that is in cdn dollars and not hedged. Do you know of one or do I need to buy one in US$? Do you think being hedged to cdn$ would affect performance other than the currency risk should the cdn$ continue sliding?
Thank you

Q: Hi, My question from Sunday appears to have been lost, so I'll try to resubmit. There has been a melt down in Sylogist stock price for past few weeks and my suspicion is that it could be due to fear of slowing regional economy due to slide in oil prices. It's a bit concerning as Technology sector, broadly has been a strong sector lately. Can you please share your thoughts on this and if Sylogist has a risk of its major customers curtail spending in IT area. Thanks
Q: Hi I am a new member. Wow what a gold mine of information! Here is my first question. I am managing my wife’s LIF and I think it would be prudent to diversify some funds in the US market to capture expected growth and take advantage of the strong US dollar. I am looking at dividend ETF’s (it is a little overwhelming) and wonder which of the following would be my best option;
DVY.US, VIG.US, VYM.US, SDY.US and SCHD.US or will I better off buying individual stocks?

Q: What blue chip companies look good now and for 2015?
Q: I saw your recommended weighting was 3% of TMA. Is this a sector call on transportation or a small cap call due the size of the company? Would your weighting on TFI be 3% also? I am thinking transportation is the perfect counterpoint to energy and was expecting it to do will in this environment. What would your weighting overall be for the transportation sector in 2015?
TIA

Q: Hi Peter
Was planning to lower my preferred shares end of year and when I glanced at a TD report , five of mine showed a due date of today so I figured I would be looking to buy some as that was more than I wanted to lessen the weight by. None were deposited today...Does perpetual mean they can keep renewing them without notice?
The ones I am talking about are BBD.C , CIBC.G WN.C,WN.D and POW.D . Is there a place to find out what the intentions are and/or which would you expect to be redeemed soon if any.
Thanks for all you do.....best of the season.

Q: It seems that noses are out of joint in the recent Couche-Tard acquisition of The Pantry. With an investigation being launched against The Pantry directors for an alleged breach of fiduciary trust, what would be the implications to ATD? Would/should ATD walk away from this deal, or would/should it simply raise its share price, if it is found that they did indeed "underpay" for Pantry shares. Your analysis of this situation would be appreciated. Thanks, as always.
