Q: What is your outlook for Zargon? Balance sheet?It's payout ratio? Safety of the dividend (it has been cut once), would you recommend this stock or would you prefer another dividend payer?

Q: I understand what P/E and EPS mean but I do NOT understand what "trailing" means when this term precedes either of these acronyms. Further on the G&M Watch List, these terms also, at times, include an * (asterisk). What is the significance of the asterisk?

Q: I would like your recommendation on ETFs for the US and Int'l portion of my portfolio. First a little background. My wife and I are both retired and in our late 50's with company pensions and CPP and OAS available when we reach age 60 and 65. Given that these income streams are secure and cover living expenses I have structured my Investment portfolio with 10% Fixed Income (CBO) and 90% equities of primarily dividend paying Canadian companies. I would now like to increase my US to 10%, Int'l exposure to 7% and Emerging Markets to 3% and want to continue to earn a good dividend yield. I would like to keep all my holdings in Cdn $ and am considering the following ETFs. The stock selection methodology of these ETFs should provide less volatility with a good and growing dividend. These would be for a long term hold.
U.S. - ZDY - 3.0%
Int'l - ZDI - 4.0%.
Emerging - RXD - 2.7%
Your thoughts on these choices or alternatives would be appreciated.

Q: I submitted a similar question last night but it seems to have been missed.

I am looking at managing the portfolios for a couple of family members and I have some questions as to the basic construction of these portfolios. Each of the portfolios is valued in the mid 6 figure range.

First, I am considering using a Canadian broad market ETF for perhaps 15% of the funds and then spreading the remaining money among 25 fully diversified stocks. I am thinking of the ETF as a way of providing a foundation but am I really only diluting the effects of the growth of the other investments?

Secondly, I would put 25% of the money into US dollar investments. When doing this, is it best to treat that as a "separate" portfolio, meaning that it should be fully diversified in its own right or are the Canada and US markets similar enough that I can ignore the border when diversifying?

Finally, do you treat spouse's investments as two separate portfolios or as one, meaning theoretically should two spouses have identical holdings?
