Q: Hello 5i, Could you explain when a stock on the TMX trades and states the day volume was - Volume:630.59K Consolidated Volume:1.13M. What do you go by to accurately know the volume of shares traded that day and the price range.

Q: Hi,
I'm curious about a listing for Intel on the CBOE Canada (formerly NEO) exchange. Can you please tell me if it is the economic equivalent of INTC on the NASDAQ, and can it be bought in a Canadian dollar RRSP account? Are there currency implications an investor should be aware of?
Thank you very much. Michael

Q: Hi 5i,

I have a question about currency as it relates to investments made to the TSX or US stock exchanges.

I am embarrassed to ask given this was likely a rookie move; posting publicly in case it helps others.

I have made investments via my TFSA, LIRA, RRSP and self directed investment account in some US equities (above).

What I perceive now to be a "problem" is that all purchases of US stocks (including those with dividends) were made out of my CA account of said RRSP, TFSA, LIRA etc. given I did not hold any USD$ in my investment accounts.

Yesterday there were a few questions around Norbert’s Gambit approach (which I am not familiar with) and I have since realized the error of my ways. Here are my questions - knowing you cannot personalize responses - but if it were YOU :

- 1) As a Canadian, should the purchase of any US equity always be purchased using US funds in said investment account? OR when available - should you purchase on the CA stock exchange?

- 2) What is the best way to transfer CAD from said investment account into the US corresponding account if one wants to be mindful of fees, exchange rates etc. (is that Norbert's approach?)

-3) What would you suggest I do for the US equities I currently own in CA accounts? Is there anything to do?

Please use any credits you see fit.
Thanks a Million.

Q: Everyone, I have been investing since 1981 and during that time very few people are interested in talking about investments. My two adult children are the same. Any ideas how I can get people talking about investing money? Clayton

Q: Hello. I used to rely on a Canadian stock total return calculator available on the Canadian stock channel. It allowed me to calculate the returns for Canadian stocks from the 1990s up to the present day. This tool was incredibly useful and helpful. However, recently, the site has become completely blank, and the calculator is no longer accessible. Do you know the reason behind this sudden change? Additionally, if you’re aware of any other platforms where I can find a similar stock return calculator, I’d greatly appreciate your insights! Thanks

Q: Good day. Today (June 20, 2024) nvidia stock dropped about 3.5%: however, the Nvidia CDR that we acquire in Canadian dollars dropped almost double this amount. Normally the ADR stock moves pretty much in line with the US stock. Is there any reason for this difference today? I believe I saw something similar a fews days ago with some other stock (or etf?). Thanks again.

Q: Hi 5i,
I'm looking for a FREE real time portfolio tracker. I'm using Watchlists on CIBC Investor's Edge, but that part of the site is so glitchy when adding/removing holdings that it's too frustrating to use.
Could I ask for your top 2 or 3 recommendations for an alternative free real time portfolio tracker? (I realize that I'm asking for something that I can use instead of 5i's Portfolio Analytics tracker and I hope you don't mind, but these days especially I'm trying to keep my costs down ...).
Thanks 5i!

Q: this is a question about financial / portfolio advice in estate planning.
Assuming I were pass on, my 3 children all in their 20's , all still in university, they would stand to inherit a million each. What investment advice would you recommend for management of their inheritance. ( I know the Buffet advice, predominantly ETFs.)

I would be curious to survey 5istaff with children and 5istaff closer to their 20's for different view points.

thanks

Q: Would you please explain stock prices that move up sharply or down sharply for a short period, perhaps only one trade, before resuming the previous price trend? An example would be NVDA that moved sharply down to $133.50ish from the $1.35s at the close yesterday before moving right back up to the $1.35s.
How does this happen and who benefits from it?
Thanks for being there for us to ask questions like this.

Q: Good evening,

I was looking to switch brokerages (from TD because of their $10 per trade fee) to a lower fee trading account. I would like a brokerage that offers low fees for trading stocks and options in Canada and the US, will allow me to keep both a US and CAN currency account, and has little or no maintenance fees (or has those fees waived for 5 digit balances or higher). I've looked into a couple of brokerages my favorite being TastyTrades however they aren't available in Canada, Wealthsimple however they charge a fee monthly to maintain a US account, CIBC however they seem to be equivalent to TD except slightly lower fees, Questtrade the price for stocks is good but for options is the equivalent to TD.

Any brokerage recommendations that fit most/all of my requirements?

Thanks,
Aidan

Q: I have an account with Scotia i trade. How to explain in this digitation era of instant data manipulation, one week after the nvdia split, the correct adjustments are not yet made in my account? Worse, some new figures concerning the stock are completely false and presently show a los in the place of a significant gain. What do you think of that....

Thank you very much.

Q: Hi, currently holding CSU 5.17%, LMN 4.86%, and TOI 1.8%. Have nice gains in all. Looking to trim some CSU and LMN and add to TOI. Would you be comfortable with this move at this time considering each of their fundamentals and valuations? Which do you think has the longest runway for growth and how would you rank them for a 5-10 yr hold.

Also, I have TVK 1.79%, HPS.A 2.02%, PRL 1.41%, WELL 1.91%. No position in DRX (how would you look to avg. into this name?). How would you rank these if you were to add to these positions currently? When looking to add, are you mainly looking at the valuation and fundamentals or does the avg. cost and % return factor into that as well? For example, my HPS.A is up 60% and PRL up 4%, does this factor into your decision of which one to add to or does it not matter and we should just consider the forward return potential? Thanks!

Q: We have accounts in RRIF and TFSA. We like to keep approx 6 months of cash in case of economic downturn. Is this too long a period or keep 3 months and invest the rest to produce income. I thought maybe because of interest rates starting to come down it maybe would change economics to positive. Will elections play a role with all the gov't calling elections in the future. we have pensions and dividends that keep us happy .We live within our means. Thanks 5i

Q: I always hear that when company Buy Back their shares that would benefit the investors. I know that when they buy back their shares number of outstanding shares reduces. Is there any other Benefit.

Plus I have seen company buy back their shares so shares get reduce and then they split their shares in next 2 years so in other words they increase their shares indirectly. Is this normal.

One example currently that Royal Bank buying back their shares usually they buy back when they are cheap on valuation since they are not cheap on valuation are they planning to split their shares.

Thanks for the great service

Q: You recently replied rather positively to a question regarding using Wealthsimple as à brokerage. I have tried them out on a small scale and found them to be very good. I have vaguely considered switching our whole portfolio over there. I hesitate, though, because of the large and established companies like TD. Since you see Wealthsimple as safe as these, do you see any great advantages of these larger companies, which would be an impediment?
Thanks
