Q: I was stunned to see that Sun Life tops a list of Corporate Canada's mountains of cash - a recent Globe and Mail piece - with $6 bb. Could you speculate what they might do with it? Hopefully not purchase a US mutual fund like Great West did with Putnam! On the subject of lifeco's I stumbled across an ad for a class action lawsuit with Manulife, the stock that was touted to be as safe as houses. If you purchased shares between 2004 and 2009 - which I did - you should register here http://www.classaction.ca. It's free to join.
Q: Why is GOOGL dropping today? Is it because of AAPL? I have heard conflicting views on owning GOOG and GOOGL. GOOG is cheaper and a few votes do not make a difference. GOOG is a stock that will be used to fund acquisitions so it will be diluted? Thanks.
MVN (Madalena) has been under a trading halt since it announced its agreement to purchase Gran Tierra Energy. Could you please comment on the announcement and future prospects of MVN?
Couche-Tard (ATD.B): the last post re ATD.B was end Apr, and your team spoke highly of it. That was pre-split. Has there been any material change in the corp to explain the decline over the past month (I could not find any news reports)? Ack the pending change of CEO, and perhaps it is simply a breather, providing a sale price in the process?
Thanks in advance. Bob
Q: Hi Peter and Team,
I recently purchased more shares of GS for my husbands RRSP during it's recent pullback at $28.46 as all the research I have done indicates that it is a good stable company with good growth, dividend and the potential for additonal special dividends or take. I was pleasantly surprised to see the bounce it today to $31.66 on the reported news that they were acquring another firm. I would like your opinion on this acquisition and would you continue to hold this stock? I know you like to hold for the long term but a 11% return in 11 days is tempting unless you see further upside.
Thanks for all the sound advice you provide.
Q: Since I already owned SVY Savannah when Eric Nuttall had it as one of his top picks, I bought more. I think I have the wrong driller, all the others seem to be moving up. In order of best of breed should I switch out of Savannah and go for PHX, WES, CDI, XDC, AKT.A, TCW, PD or FRC. Could you please rank for me. Thanks for everything.
Q: Thanks for the report on MRC. You commented that FFO deceased in last qtr due to increase interest & corp expense. Why is this not a reason for concern?
Q: Hi team:
last time some members raised a question on PWF is in late Feb
I hold this for dividend income and hopefully some capital gain
It has been declining for awhile
Is there any fundamental reasons for this decline?
For a long term hold for dividend income, would you give it a
B or B plus recommendations ? Thanks
Q: Hi Peter:
I hold this: MFR.UN.T
in my RRSP portfolio
what you say it is of decent hold as an income generating
investment; if not what would you suggest ?
thanks!
After a collapse in share price in March to $8.10, Transat's share price has been gradually recovering and then today was up over 6 percent to close at $9.40. To partially assess risk reward I look at average analysts' one year price targets which for Transat are either $15.47 (Globe) or $15.50 (Thompson R), offering significant possible upside potential. At $9.40 it is still selling at less than BV with no debt (that I can determine). It is a small position for me (about 1.5 %) but I am contemplating increasing that to perhaps 2 %, but I have no insight as to why the price has moved up. I was wondering what thoughts or recent info (in addition to your March report), you might have. Thanks.
In a registered account, what ETFs would you recommend for the fixed income part of a portfolio. I currently own XBB and CBO , and am looking for alternatives to diversify from bonds. Which one of your recommendations would be your first choice to add to these? Thank you
