Q: After the news today from SGY I was surprised there was little reaction from the market other than volume.Some of us thought it would move the stock up sharply. Could you please comment?

Q: Renegade Petro RPL

Since the beginning of this year much has happened for RPL and their relationship with ALX. The biggest change obviously is the share RPL price going from $0.91 at the beginning of the year to $1.91 as of today. Considering I was watching this stock, I feel through my own inexperience was the reason I really "missed the boat" on this one.

For my own educational purposes, what factors were involved which generated the tremendous RPL share price increase for Q1 on onward?

Q: When selling a stock short and buying it back in a different year. Do I report gain or loss in the year the transaction is closed ? Would the same rule apply when selling put option in one year and buy it back or exercised the year after?

Q: Regarding Jacques' question on March 26, 2014 and the response, it is correct that no tax slips would be issued for any TFSA since it is a tax free account. All that happens when dividend withholding taxes are applied is the cash dividend you receive in your TFSA from US holdings is reduced by the withholding tax. This is also true if you hold foreign non-US holdings in an RRSP based in countries in which Canada does not have a tax treaty with in relation to RRSP's. I have seen this in my own RRSP account where I have had withholding taxes taken off my Teva dividends. The main purpose of a T3 tax slip is to distribute income to the taxpayer for a taxable account. They are not going to give you the benefit of any deductions if there is no income to be taxed. Yes, TD ofers it and that is who we currently invest with. Basically, when you sell a U.S. stock it stays in U.S. currency in a moneymarket fund and when you place a U.S. order, the money in the U.S. moneymarket is used to fill it. This prevents you from contantly having to pay currency conversion fees. We have it on both our RRSPs and TFSA accounts. It's not usually offered in non-registered because you would just have a U.S. trading account. Hope this asnwers the question.

Q: While I understand that you really like Stantec(STN), the market has been driving the shares down recently. Because your report on Stantec is somewhat dated could you please provide an analysis on the company in terms of earnings per share for the next 1-2 years, revenue growth, share valuation relative to historical trends, etc. What future catalysts do you see as influencing future share prices. Is there potential for the shares to continue downward to the $54 area where they were trading last October. At that price, they would be trading at about 15 times this year's expected earnings. What is a reasonable valuation for the company shares? As a secondary question how often do you anticipate updating company reports? Thanks.

Q: Another TFSA VS RiF question: I take out the mandated % of my RiF. Does it make sense to take out even more and invest those dollars inside our TFSA's because of the no tax on TFSA withdrawals? Or even take out RSP funds from my wife's account and invest those inside her TFSA?
My logic is - for example SGY - I expect it to grow and provide a nice dividend in the years ahead neither of which would be taxed when/if I withdraw those $ from one of our TFSA's.

Q: Hello Peter et al....What do you think about oil and gas companies...such as TBE, RPL, AFT.UN, SGL, TDG, WCP that bill themselves as: Sustainable Dividend Income with Moderate Growth Companies? Their yield varies between 4 and 8%. They look like the former income trusts except they seem to be extracting the product from lands where the minerals rights are owned privately rather than by the Crown. I would appreciate your views on such firms. Are they worth further attention? Can they withstand a downturn in commodity prices?

Q: Hi Peter & 5i: The market appears to be punishing Argonaut (AR), for its most recently reported results, with new 52-week lows. The other gold companies that I view as potential holdings are all up substantially from their lows and gold is up over $100 an ounce from its bottom (though all have retreated some from their most recent peaks). I’m very light on golds and looking to start taking my weighting up with a basket of 4 or 5 holdings. What do you think of adding some AR at the current level? Thanks.
