Q: I would appreciate your view on convertible bonds (debentures)as an alternative to corporate bonds or preferred shares for income particularly in a rising equity environment and in a potentially rising interest rate environment. Is a laddered approach feasible? I have found only three ETFs devoted to convertible bonds, CVD and CXF in Canada and CWB in the US. The first two fall short of their benchmarks which surprised me as I thought ETFs were supposed to mimic their benchmarks. CWB on the other hand has done well lately. Are there half a dozen or so converts that you could recommend if one wanted to start a ladder? Thank you; I look forward to your reply.

PS: perhaps a listing in "View by Category" for preferred shares and convertible debentures would facilitate searches?

Q: Thanks for the great service. I'm looking to add a ETF (such as IWO) in a non-registered USD account. Given some of these etf's have had large moves I'm worried that if I buy before the end of the year I will get a large taxable distribution. Is this a valid concern? Thanks, Ed

We need to add US Healthcare to our portfolio. We already own GSK and MRK. We are looking at Zimmer holdings ( ZMH ) or Stryker corp ( SYK ). With the aging population, knees and hips replacment should be on the rise.
Could you give me your opinion on these two and possibly an alternative if you don't know them.

Q: I normally do not consider investing in debentures mainly because I really do not understand them however, I have come across one that looks interesting: Premium Brands Convertible Unsecured Subordinated Debentures (PBH.DB.C-TSX).

Q: Attracted by the concept of a cost plus airline, a low PE and a large dividend I have been in CHR.B from near its inception. Its recent arbitration win was received with very mixed forecasts - for example 1yr Targets of $2.25 (NBF) and $4.00 (Scotia). High debt is cited as a major issue but it seems justified to upgrade the fleet within the protection of the CPA with AC. High costs which likely flow from AC's prior mismanagement are also a hurdle. Management seems aware of and focussed on their cost issues. Is Management seen by the street to be incapable and is their strategic direction seriously flawed?

Q: A suggestion rather than a comment. When searching the company reports, the indexes show the current rating beside all the entries for a company even if there have been more than one report. For example, the BAD report for May 8/12 shows the current rating of B+ whereas the actual report of May 8/12 was A-. If the index rating showed the actual rating at the time of each report this would provide a useful perspective re momentum.

Q: Hey 5I Team,
I am having a hard time buying a consumer staple stock such as: ul,tatyy,syy,pg,nsrgy,krft,kmb,hnz,gis,cag,clx,cpb as they have not met my minimum threshold of 4% dividend. Should I wait for this to happen as that sector seems overvalued? I do not want to buy in and get hit like the RIET sector. Currently what would be your best pick out of these, or do you have another?
