Q: i have listed some cdn oil companies, i own ath and cpg. my question is with oil at 91. none of the above companies or all cdn or u.s oil companies stock price even comes close to an oil price of 91., most are 25-30% below where they should be. they are coining so much cash it defies description.
why is this and will it ever change or is this the environment re oil and gas-dirty fuel etc we just have to live with. dave

5i Research Answer:

There could be a multitude of reasons, including fear or recession, fear of OPEC turning the taps back on, the Ukraine War ending, ESG-focus, government interference in the sector and so on. But we agree. Stocks are especially cheap, companies are printing money and balance sheets are vastly improved. With oil finally moving, investors are at least paying some attention now. The sector is now up 5.7% YTD. We think investors will come around. If not, companies will just privatize and keep their cash flow themselves without the hassle of being public. We think the sector is quite attractive right now. We are still not sure we would want 18% exposure (the TSX weighting) but certainly the risk/return matrix is looking good.
