Q: Not a question, but a comment in regards to Patricia's question regarding the tank cars used for shipping oil by rail. Many rail cars are leased from large non-railway corporations (GE rail leasing, a GE subsidiary as an example) with long term leases. In cases like this, GE will have to eat a big chunk of the cost of retrofitting the cars (65k per car or so), and not necessarily the railway or the shipper.

Q: A recent Globe and Mail article was titled "Winning and Losing Stocks for a Low-Loonie Era". In it, one analyst named Patrick Kenney suggested that Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners is "seen as a moderate loser".
Do you agree with this assertion, and if so, should I re-think my exposure to BEP.UN? (Currently overweight in my RRSP). Thanks as always for the great service and timely advice.

Q: You last commented on CHB in May 2013. It has done quite well for a fixed income ETF over 3 years with an average return of 8.34%. Would you care to update your opinion on their hybrid strategy in the present investment climate? Thank you.
Q: Hi,
I own FRU since 2009 (30%pa) but 9%pa since 2011; I like the business model (nothing earth shattering but steady). I'm thinking of buying Clearwater Royalty when EnCana will spin it off. What do you think of it and how do I proceed to make the purchase.
Thanks
Tony

Q: My reading of articles regarding the market activity over the last couple of days suggests a quantum shift in expectations: currency concerns, earnings lower than expected, potential deflation, more anxiety over China, etc. etc.
Can you tie the story lines together and share your views on what has really happened, why and where we are likely to go from here - flat, down or maybe another upward bounce. And how to manage one's portfolio in the days or weeks ahead
As usual, a grateful 5i customer.

Q: We started a family RESP for our grandkids in 2007 with 3 TD e-funds on an equal PAC basis (MER's are 0.33% to 0.51%). The account now shows Canadian Index Fund (TDB900) value at 30%, Dow Jones Index (TDB903) at 38%, and International Index (TDB911) at 32%; I sometimes think about rebalancing but think perhaps doing nothing is the best approach as the laggards may catch up in time. Would 5i have any different thoughts about the way these funds are invested? Funds won't be withdrawn till 2021 at the earliest. Thanks, J.
Q: Hi Peter, 5i Research,

Q: Hi, I am considering buying Chubb (CB). I like that they are buying back shares, that they have a good history of raising the dividend (although the yield is not very high) and that debt seems low. The p/e seems also reasonable but I don't know if it is average for this type of company. I would like your view on whether it is good value at this price. Thanks.
Q: It would appear that gold may have bottomed out. I already hold G and like it because, apart form the price of gold, it is well run, with sound business practices in place and attention to generating decent returns for investors. l am looking to add another gold stock and am looking for your guidance. I would like a company that, regardless if gold stays where it is now or drops a bit further, still looks okay on fundamentals (e.g. producing gold at a low cost per oz, & has good reserves), has lots of cash on hand, does not need to go to the capital markets for more financing, trades at a substantial discount to book value, would provide excellent upside if gold moves higher, and hopefully has mines in stable countries. Ross Healy, a guy I really respect, picked IMG the other day on BNN as a gold stock having substantial upside however I see their main operating mines are in West Africa (Burkina Faso, Suriname, Mail) which turned me off a bit in terms of stability.
Any comments on a pick would be appreciated. Love your service.
