Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: One of my designated long term investments - XTC just went over in the "overbought" territories today (RSI - 72.02). What usually follows after it reaches this threshold? Do SP a). usually retreat for good, b). retreat and then restart the climb again shortly, or c). going sideways from that point on?

If it's b). I might try to lock in the profit now and buy back at a lower price later. Is that a sound strategy? Your insight is much appreciated.

I have no experience in handling runaway winners. I'm good at dealing with losers though, lot of experience there.

Q: I had a bond get called in the fixed income part of the portfolio. I'm looking at Great Canadian Gaming July 2022 6.625% bond. The bond is callable in July 2017. Do you think the consent solicitation earlier this year is a sign they will call the bond early?
I know your not really into bonds, in your opinion would it be a better idea to consider giving up some yield to possibly get some capital gains in one of these 2 convertible bonds:
Element Financial Jun 2020, YTM is only 2.3%, but its convertible 22% higher than todays equity price.
DH Corporation Sep 2020, YTM is only 3.5%, but its convertible 30% higher than todays equity price.

Q: Hello Peter & Co,
I am very pleased with my 8.6% portfolio performance in the first half of 2015; this performance continues the trend of 17%total return per annum for the past 6 years.
However, my exposure to the industrial / infrastructure/ transportation sector is quite narrow with only BIN, BIP.UN and CNR; I also hold LNR and MG but I have placed them under Consumer discretionary.
Could you please suggest a few names to fit in that category?
Thanks,
Antoine

Q: Please compare AFN with AGU. My tendency would be to side with AGU based on its size and more favorable stock performance but I see you have some positive comments on AFN.
Thanks for the great service.

Q: Hi 5i team
What do you think the effect will be on the TSX traded DHX.B stock share price of the announcement today of issuance of 8.7 million voting and non-voting shares. Should we be concerned of a drop in value?
regards
Kathy

Q: Hi Peter, I need to deploy some capital and wanted to pick 3 names up during this "Grexit" correction. Can you please suggest 3 of your best names based on total return basis for a 5 year hold? (Fyi, I hold all the stocks of your growth portfolio, but I can also double down if you suggest)

Q: Good Afternoon Peter, Ryan, and Team,
In my wife's RRSP she holds a position in Fiera Capital (FSZ-TSX). Her account holds most of the companies in your Model Income Portfolio. She will start taking money from this account in 2-3 years. I see that you now have included IGM Financial in the Model Income Portfolio. FSZ has had better dividend growth (lower yield though), is as cheap or cheaper than IGM, and FSZ is run by a savvy management team. Does it make sense to switch from FSZ to IGM ??? Thank you, as always, for your sage advice. DL

Q: I wonder if the sum of your report card categories for PM reflect your overall opinion of the company. Your report has 12 categories and PM received 83% of A, 33 % of B and 17% C. Yet, It's overall rating is C+. Does this suggest that some categories should be weighted or do you need more categories or maybe C+ is too severe? ...Sleepless in Niagara

Q: Good day folks: I am back to square one on this one and am thinking that it might be a good time to sell what with Alberta's economy, NDP gov't and new carbon rules. I am interested in how you see it over the next 12 months, I have yet to completed the recommended model portfolio and could relocate capital to that.
as always, thanks for your insights.

Q: Hi Peter and Team,

Apparently easyhome Ltd. (EH) is planning to change its name to "goeasy Ltd." Would this be because the loan business, in their view, has greater potential than their furniture, etc. rental business?

In general, when a company changes its name, could there be an impact on the share price? Specifically, I'd appreciate your view on this proposed name change. (We just received a voting instruction form.)

Thanks as always for your valued insight.

Q: My current tech positions are: OTC, AVO and GIB.A. I recently traded ESL for GIB.A because GIB is much cheaper. I am now considering trading OTC { down 15% } for MDA. I sense MDA will have more growth over the next 2 years. Is trading OTC for MDA a good move? Thank you for your opinion.
