Earnings can be good, beating market expectations, and stocks can still fall. It did see some margin contraction in the quarter, as we noted in our response, and despite positive earnings, the current market environment is still not favouring software names even if results look good on the surface. If VHI had a wider beat on earnings and sales, announced it expects significant margin expansion in the coming quarters, and the market was heavily green today, we might expect its price to be positive, but it is a risk-off environment that is not favoring software names.
It is not the only software name to report positive earnings and still see the stock price decline (ADBE's earnings are up and to the right, yet the stock continues to fall even after positive earnings, SNOW reported good results, stock still dipped, NOW, ORCL, etc.).
The market is in a 'show-me' mode where software names not only need to beat on sales and earnings, but also need to demonstrate expansion in margins, near-perfect execution, and even then, the market might sell them off. We saw irrational moves take place for longer than expected in 2022 as well, they typically do not last forever.
