Q: I’m a buy and hold investor. Fundamentals need to change to sell. I have both Manulife and Sun Life in different accounts. Looking at both holdings over 10 year hold. Sun life stock performance outweighs Manulife performance. Question? Should I swap Manulife for SunLife or keep positions in both? Manulife is in my non registered, RRSP and TFSA accounts.

Without getting personal, we have these comments: We do prefer SLF over MFC for many reasons, but largely due to its more-conservative nature and dividend history (MFC has had to cut its dividend before). SLF has outperformed but is more expensive, so there is a trade off. So if just one we would choose SLF, but we also believe in diversification, and do not today see MFC as problematic in any way. The valuation aside, it has potential and offers a nice yield. We would be quite comfortable owning both.
