Q: My 100 year old father has a few dividend paying stocks but most of his portfolio is in GIC’s. One GIC just expired and I am looking to buy something new for him. I find that a one year renewal will only achieve a 1.4% interest. He will not need money from this source for about 5 years thus can invest in anything fairly safe. The only issue is death which I believe would result in selling to satisfy estate requirements. I was thinking of banks, pipelines, etc because of limited downside and relatively high dividend rates compared to GIC’s. Can you please comment and provide some suggestions? Thank you. As always I very much value your comments.

Q: Hi Peter and team My question relates to Alta Gas (ALA). RBC has a sector perform rating while NBF has an outperform. In looking over their reports I see virtually identical estimates of dividend increases for 2014 but NBF goes further with a projection of a 15% increase for 2015. RBC says it is fully valued at the current price while NBF maintains it sells at a discount to the "high payout group" with 2015 estimates P/AFFO of 10.4 cf. with group average of 12. I would like to know your opinion.

Thanks

Ross

Q: The Altagas (ALA) purchase of 25% of Petrogas sounds good, except how do we determine whether the price was reasonable? The news release indicates it will be accretive to earnings and cash flow per share, but doesn't give a timeline. Any thoughts on the merits of the purchase, or is it a case of wait and see. I hold a 3% position from a purchase several years ago and will continue to hold, but would purchase more if the deal appears to be particularly good from the ALA view.

Q: I'm about to sell either or both ALA & ARX. Have held since 2009 - done well but they are both down about 10% over the last yr. ARX in particular will likely have a cash shortfall this year & probably resort to another debt issue. Your comments are appreciated. Thanks

Q: my question is regarding Altagas (ALA-T). i purchased it for a core position in my son's account at about $25 and needless to say i'm very happy about the results. the way i understand things is that substantial "ebitda" should occur in the next several years.some of their contracts are very lucrative, long term and inflation protected.i guess management performance will be key to ensure these projects are properly executed . another concern i have is "when" interest rates do rise (and i realize that may several years away), would't a stock like ALA would get lambasted in that environment ? so finally, i'm thinking of buying more, what are your likes and dislikes about this stock. thanx norm
