Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Could you compare Morguard( MRC) and First Capital Realty (FCR)? They both get a B+, and have very different client bases and dividends.

Do you have any concerns about FCR being a mall landlord in times when e-retailing is on the rise?

Thank you all! I wish we could get such straight talk from our politicians!

Q: Good morning, I just want to thank Bryan (June 3) for his suggestion re: a donation button and your answer which led me to the National Kids Cancer website where I donated to Peter's ride challenge. A very worthy cause and a great challenge for Peter. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to donate to this cause. Like Bryan I, too, am very pleased to be able to give something back as a token of my appreciation for the fantastic advice 5i has given me. Since I started my subscription and changed by investments I am up 77% in 18 months. Thanks, 5i team. Best of luck on your ride, Peter.

Q: Peter - thanks for your earlier comments on Just Energy (JE).

Today's announcement: Just Energy to sell National Energy for $505-million

They also announce the dividend will drop from 0.84 to 0.50 and go from monthly to quarterly.

Is this enough to improve the debt situation and help right the ship?

The market seems to like it (so far).

Thanks.

Q: Hello,

Ref: 4 Jun question from Thomas about laying one stock chart over another.

NB: You indicate about posting it to the Resources Q&A section, although I cannot find such a section. That is maybe where I should be posting this (plse advise where this section is).

Many free sites offer a comparison feature (Google Finance and Yahoo Finance being two). I use Google for my example, and will use BNS and TD to compare. Enter BNS in ticker field, and one will get a chart of the stock price in $. Select time period you want (let us use one year). Above the left top corner of the chart box is the 'compare' field, enter TD, and select the add button. The chart will convert to two lines: one line for BNS and one for TD (each in diff colours) and the scale will convert to %. One can then read the chart to see the relative performance for the time period selected. One can add quite a few names to the same chart. Hope this helps.

Q: Hi Gents,

What is the Summary Portfolio that was posted to site 2 Jun (I am new to site, and cannot find an explanation or come up with one myself)? It cannot be the A and B stocks as there are C rated stocks on the list, and it is more than the Income and Model combined.
Thanks.

Q: I read an article on BNN today entitled:

Energy Watch: RBC’s 4 drilling stocks to buy ahead of drilling season

For a buy and hold investor, which of the 4 drilling companies mentioned, would you recommend?

CFW, ESI, PD, or TCW.

Thanks for all you do for us retail investors.

Q: I own both LGT.B & ALC. LGT.B has been on a tear for the past 2 weeks but not ALC. Can you suggest a reason for the discrepancy?
I am thinking ALC has had to borrow money to purchase the new ships. Could the borrowing costs be depressing ALC's earnings? Presumably once the loans are paid down and the lower operating costs of the new ships start to make their impact ALC's earnings (and share price) will increase. (Hopefully the loans will be paid down before interest rates start to rise). Does this make sense?

Both ALC and LGT.B seem to be thinly traded however I found it more difficult to purchase LGT.B over ALC. I suppose a thinly traded stock ought to increase more rapidly due to the lack of float. (It should also drop more rapidly too!) I think the main trouble with these 2 companies is lack of float. ALC did a 10 for 1 stock split about 18 months ago which helped. I suppose LGT.B would need to reach about $100 to do a split.

Anyways thanks for listening (actually reading).

Q: Just a suggestion: think it would also be helpful to have questions that are related to US stocks show up when you search for the ".US" field, if possible. Right now, they only show up when you search for the specific symbol name. Not sure how easy this could be to incorporate, but thought I would ask. Thanks!

Q: Instead of bonds I have 2 mutual funds (I know dirty words!) that I consider fixed assets. I think they are both excellent but I would like your opinion. NCE617 Sentry Canadian Income and NCE621 Sentry Small/Mid Cap. I have about 1/3 or my portfolio in these funds as well as 40 stocks. I have about $5,000 in each of your growth portfolio stocks.

THANKS FOR YOUR WORK! I WOULD LIKE TO BUY YOU A BEER! (or TWO)
