Q: The sector classification for Amazon is Consumer Discretionary, while Shopify is classified under Technology. I always thought that these two companies were quite similar, so why are they placed in different sectors? Thank you

5i Research Answer:

There are two sector classification systems, and exchanges and index committees are the ones that categorize companies. AMZN was in tech initially but S&P shifted it several years ago.
