Q: Last week Amazon reports cloud unit’s annualized AI revenue exceeds $15 billion and gets rewarded by market while SHOP gets beaten up. Coincidence? Is SHOP competitive in the cloud, or is the moat weak here?

5i Research Answer:

Shopify (SHOP) does not run a general‑purpose cloud platform like Amazon Web Services, where third parties can rent raw compute, storage, or databases. Instead, Shopify is itself a SaaS “commerce cloud” built on top of other cloud providers and its own data centers: it uses a hybrid/multicloud setup with AWS, Google Cloud (its preferred cloud provider in recent years), plus private infrastructure to host Shopify’s own e‑commerce platform. Thus, the report last week does not mean SHOP is falling behind.
